🇿🇦 South Africa opposition holds protest over power cuts
South Africa’s main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), is holding a march in Johannesburg to protest against worsening power cuts across the country.
The march is heading towards the headquarters of the governing party, the ANC. There have been small pockets of unrest as a result, but this appears to be the largest demonstration in recent months. The DA says the ANC-led government is to blame for the persisting power crises.
The regular blackouts have been blamed on the government’s poor management of the power utility, Eskom, and an aging fleet of coal-fired stations.

🇸🇩 Democratic bloc threatens to disrupt government formation process in Sudan
Representative of the Democratic Bloc, Mubarak Ardol, said that "any government formed after the adoption of the framework agreement would not find national or international acceptance," and stressed that his bloc would not allow the Central Council to form any government.
He pointed out that the Egyptian initiative could lead to new positive solutions and a national formula to resolve the crisis, which would also help form a national government.
Ardol is confident that this would be much better than the current framework agreement, which he called "Socialist Union," adding that "the Central Council rejected Cairo's call because that way it would not be able to impose its vision on this initiative."

🇻🇦🇨🇩 Pope Francis moves ahead with delayed Africa visit despite violence in Congo
Embarking next week on his 40th apostolic visit abroad, Pope Francis hopes to bring “a word of peace” and consolation during his long-awaited visit to Congo and South Sudan, Vatican spokesman said.
However, a recent surge in violence in DR Congo has raised concerns about the pope’s safety when he touches down in the capital city of Kinshasa on January 31. Despite concerns for the pope’s safety on the trip, Vatican spokesman told that “there was no specific threat” to Pope Francis. “There is a great effort by the local authorities to ensure security,” he added.
Upon arrival, Francis will meet with civil and religious authorities in the country. He will remain in Kinshasa until February 3, then will visit Juba, South Sudan, before returning to Rome February 5.

🇺🇸🇳🇬 US issued visa ban for some Nigerians
The United States government has announced a visa ban on some unnamed Nigerians “for undermining the democratic process in a recent Nigerian election”.
In a statement US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, described the action as a reflection of his government’s “commitment to supporting Nigeria’s aspiration to combat corruption and strengthen democracy and the rule of law”.
Secretary of state explained that the individuals affected will not be granted visa to enter the US, “under a policy to restrict visas of those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Nigeria”. He also said that their family members may also be subject to these restrictions.
