๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡พ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ New details have been released regarding the CIA director's visit to Libya

During a meeting with Khalifa Haftar, CIA director, William Burns, demanded from the commander-in-chief his cooperation with Tripoli to secure oil facilities in the eastern region of the country. But still Burns considers Haftar as a partner in the military field as well as in the field of security. For his part, Khalifa Haftar asked the CIA director to have more connections and contacts with the American side, including asking for American support.

In a meeting with the Government of National Unity's (GNU) Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, William Burns stressed the need "for Libya's elections to bring stability to the country," calling the GNU "a partner the U.S. can rely on." Dbeiba asked the U.S. to unify the international position rejecting negative regional interventions in Libya, and also asked the U.S. to make Libya a real political, economic, and security partner for them.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ National shutdown threat in protest against Eskom's rolling blackouts and tariff hikes in South Africa

The nationwide shutdown has been endorsed by members of the public, civil society organizations and political parties across various social media platforms, with many planning to either march to the Union Buildings or Eskom's Megawatt Park offices in Johannesburg. However, a date and venue for the shutdown have not been announced.

The recent approval by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), the energy regulator, to increase the Eskom tariff to 18.65% for 2023 and a 12.74% hike for 2024 has prompted the threat of a national shutdown.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ Mohamed Ali, exiled entrepreneur, sentenced to life imprisonment in Egypt

A military court in Egypt sentenced Mohamed Ali to life imprisonment on Sunday, according to state media. In addition, the businessman has been placed on the blacklist of "terrorists" which means that he is banned from traveling and that his assets in Egypt are frozen.

Living in Spain since 2018, the Ali had been at the origin of demonstrations against President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in September 2019. Building contractor, Ali made himself known in 2019 via videos that went viral on social networks. He accused the president and the country's military elite of corruption. These videos had resulted, at the end of September 2019, in demonstrations bringing together hundreds of people in Cairo and in several other cities of the country.

After these rallies, 4,000 people were arrested, and Mohamed Ali said he was tracked down and threatened, even if he was abroad.

๐Ÿ”ด Farm attacks is one of the biggest problems of South Africa. The attacks target farmers, who are usually white, and farms workers.

Farm murders have become a very unique phenomenon in South Africa, not only in terms of the extremely high frequency at which South African farmers are murdered, but also the extreme levels of brutality and torture that characterize these crimes. Unfortunately, this is also a phenomenon that the South African government mostly chooses to ignore.

Farm attacks became a major concern in the new South Africa a few years after the end of apartheid. The term "Farm attacks" has no formal legal definition, but such attacks have been the subject of discussion by media and public figures in South Africa and abroad.

To make this issue visible, weโ€™ve collected the data on the farm attacks in 2022 โ€“ and these are just the cases mentioned in the media and Twitter. The real numbers remain unknown.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Ugandan president urges overseas travel ban for MPs

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni over the weekend called for a ban on overseas travel by members of parliament and civil servants to save money for priority areas.

He made the remarks while commissioning facilities at Uganda Petroleum Institute-Kigumba where the country intends to train local experts in oil exploration. Uganda hopes to start pumping millions of barrels of oil in 2025 from its vast oil reserves, but the president was unimpressed that the training institute was still incomplete due to a lack of funds.

"Tell the civil servants and the MPs [to] stop travelling abroad. Money being wasted in external travel and yet Kigumba is crying for money," he said.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ Ghana extends domestic debt exchange deadline for third time

Ghana has again extended the deadline to register for its domestic debt exchange, this time to January 31, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta said.

The crisis-hit nation launched the debt swap plan at the start of December, days before clinching a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $3 billion rescue package.

The IMF has said its board will approve the deal only if Ghana undergoes comprehensive debt restructuring. The deadline for the debt swap, initially set for December 19, had previously been extended to December 30 and then to January 16.

Ghana last week offered to pay holders of its 2023 bond a 2% cash fee in exchange for registering for the exchange, but opposition to the programme has remained pervasive.

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ด Somalia says it has seized key port town from al-Shabaab

Somaliaโ€™s government-led forces have captured towns Galcad and Xarardheere, an al-Shabab stronghold in the Indian Ocean, the defense minister said on Monday. These are first major towns captured by the government since 2016.

Harardhere was a major base for pirates hijacking merchant ships until 2011. It was later taken over by al Shabaab, which first rose up against the government in 2007 before pledging its allegiance to al Qaeda.

The government and allied clan militias have forced the rebels from swathes of territory in central Somalia since launching a major offensive last August. Hassan Mohamed, a former military officer, said the government should replicate its cooperation with clan-based militias across the country.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Court halts private prosecution against Ramaphosa

The Johannesburg High Court on Monday granted South Africaโ€™s President Cyril Ramaphosa an urgent interdict, halting his prosecution in a case brought by his predecessor, Jacob Zuma. This means that the president will not have to appear in a criminal court as an accused.

Mr Zuma accuses the president of failing to act against a state prosecutor and a journalist for allegedly disclosing his confidential medical records.

The interdict halts Ramaphosaโ€™s private prosecution by former President Jacob Zuma for now. Ramaphosa is challenging the legitimacy of his private prosecution, which will now be heard in a civil court.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Nigeria's inflation dips in December after 10 months of increases

Annual inflation in Nigeria dipped in December to 21.34% after 10 straight monthly increases, the statistics bureau said on Monday, ahead of a central bank meeting to set interest rates next week.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) had attributed rising inflation, which hit 21.47% in November, to a sharp increase in demand ahead of the holiday season and a rise in production costs coupled with a weaker naira currency.

Food inflation dropped to 23.75% in December from November's rate of 24.13% as Nigeria struggled with high prices for staples.

High inflation, weak economic growth and mounting insecurity are major issues for voters as Nigeria heads for legislative and presidential elections next month, in which incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari will not take part due to term limits.
