In 1966, New York City WPIX (Channel 11) aired a filmed loop of a crackling fireplace for Christmas Eve. The idea was simple and practical: give apartment-dwellers in NYC the feeling of a real fireplace. It originally aired commercial-free, with only classical Christmas music and the sound of the fire. It became immensely popular, drawing millions of viewers and quickly, other TV stations across the U.S. copied the idea. Over time, it evolved from a local NYC broadcast into a national holiday custom. In fact, The WPIX Yule Log was so popular that when it was briefly discontinued in the 1970s, viewers complained loudlyโhelping bring it back and cement its status as a Christmas institution.
