Protesters have targeted a bank branch in Glasgow city centre in the early hours of this morning. Police have cordoned off an area around Argyle Street and Buchanan Street after the incident which saw the city's HSBC branch covered in red paint.

Police were called to the scene at around 4am on Friday, December 12 after a report of vandalism to the premises. Images taken of the branch show red paint which appears to have been sprayed or thrown onto the windows of the bank.

A well-known football fan and author fell to his death putting up Union Flags on lampposts near his home.

Paul Lumber, 60, was one of the leading figures in Bristol City's notorious City Service Firm and published author of books about the days of the 'football casuals' scene of the 1980s.

Mr Lumber had been fundraising to buy Union and St George flags to put up around the city before the tragic accident on November 23.

He had been attaching a flag to a lamppost near his home in South Bristol before he fatally fell from a ladder and suffered multiple injuries, including serious head injuries.

Paramedics rushed to save him and he was taken to the hospital, where he was placed in an induced coma but he never woke up, passing away late last week.

Lawyers are warning the threshold for securing a conviction will be โ€œsignificantly lessโ€ than it is south of the border when โ€œone of the most significant shifts to Scotlandโ€™s criminal justice system in living memoryโ€ comes into force in less than three weeksโ€™ time.

The Law Society of Scotland commented ahead of the abolition of the not proven verdict, which has been a feature of Scotlandโ€™s justice system for centuries, on January 1 2026. Scrapping the controversial verdict was one of the key reforms included in the Victims, Witnesses and Justice Reform (Scotland) Act which was passed by Holyrood earlier this year.

There have been no migrant arrivals in small boats crossing the Channel for 28 days, according to Home Office figures.

The last recorded arrivals were on 14 November, making it the longest uninterrupted run since autumn 2018 after no reported arrivals yesterday.

However, a number of Border Force vessels were active in the English Channel on Saturday morning, indicating that there may be arrivals today.

The British Medical Association (BMA) has warned against public "scaremongering" over the current flu outbreak as its members vote on whether to carry out planned strikes in England next week.

It comes after Health Secretary Wes Streeting said he was "extremely worried" about the "double whammy" of rising numbers of flu patients in hospitals and forthcoming resident doctor strikes.

BMA resident doctors committee chair Dr Jack Fletcher said that while the union was not "diminishing" the impact of flu, Streeting "should not be scaremongering the public into thinking that the NHS will not be able to look after them."

The result of a BMA ballot is due on Monday. If it is rejected, a five-day strike will begin on Wednesday.

Winter Wonderland exploded into violence last night after a mass brawl broke out as parkgoers were trying to leave the festive event.

In the footage, a group of people can be seen tussling against a fence as they swing punches at each other while a security guard watches on from behind a barrier.

As one of the men steps away, a woman begins slapping the back of his head before he violently shoves her against the fence.

The same man then begins brawling with another man, who is being held by security, shouting expletives at him.

A third man then lunges at the man sending him careering towards the fence. A woman, who found herself caught in the crossfire, appeared to have also been punched unconscious sending her falling to the ground.
