Electric vehicle owners have reacted with dismay to another tax being slapped on their eco-friendly cars after the Chancellor announced plans to impose mileage-based electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) charges from April 2028.
It will be charged at a rate of 3p per mile, and 1.5p per mile for hybrid car owners.
New car owners will be offered the option of estimating their first year's mileage in order to set their initial rate.
Some drivers online have threatened to tamper with odometers to avoid paying the tax - which the Government says it expects.

One of the two members of the National Guard who were shot in Washington DC on Wednesday has died, US President Donald Trump said.
Sarah Beckstrom, 20, succumbed to her injuries, President Trump said on Thursday evening.
The second National Guard member, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, "is fighting for his life", he said.

An NHS screening programme for prostate cancer could come one step closer if it's backed today by a key committee that advises the government.
One in seven men with prostate cancer actually have a normal PSA level.
And even those with a high level may have a cancer that is so slow growing that it's just not a threat.
That's why the National Screening Committee has warned in the past that PSA screening could lead men to have surgery or other treatment that they don't actually need. Treatment can result in incontinence or impotence.

A mugger who murdered an 87-year-old man as he walked home with his shopping has been jailed for a minimum of 23 years.
The Old Bailey heard how Peter Augustine, 59, lost his temper during an attempt to steal John Mackey's bag outside a Co-op store in Manor House, north London, on 6 May.
Mr Mackey, who lived in Finsbury Park but was originally from Ireland, died in hospital two days after the attack, in which he was kicked, punched and stamped on.

COPS have released CCTV images in the hunt for a man following an alleged rape and robbery in the early hours of 15th October.
The victim, a man in his 30s, was reportedly attacked at a property in Crawley, West Sussex, before having his watch and money stolen.

Attempted rape charges against two Romanian teenagers, that sparked widespread racially-motivated riots across Northern Ireland, have been withdrawn.
The boys, aged 14 and 15, were accused of attempting to rape a schoolgirl in Ballymena, County Antrim on 7 June.

FAMILIES have been left in shock after the sudden death of a Scots school pupil.
Renfrewshire Council confirmed that the child attended Paisley Grammar School.

Sir Chris Hoy has voiced his disappointment after mass screening for prostate cancer was not recommended for use on the NHS.
