meaning: to go contrary to someone's natural disposition

Examples:
“Having to get up this early in the morning really goes against my grain.”
This refers to the fact that someone who rubs his hand against the grain on a piece of lumber will get splinters.

They say "A man is a man if he keeps his promises and pays his debts".
But it seems that I am not that kind man whose qualities would match the ones described above.
