Transcript:

Previous studies have suggested that around a third of very overweight people are healthy – they have normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels despite being classed as obese, according to their body mass index, which is a measure of height versus weight. But a new analysis of the medical records of 3.5m UK residents suggests the idea of healthy obesity is a myth. Compared to those of a normal weight, it suggests even outwardly healthy obese people have a 49% greater risk of developing coronary heart disease.

This remarkable footage shows a drone being used to smuggle drugs into a UK prison. And here in Guernsey, prison chiefs are leading the way in tackling this aerial menace. You are about to see a drone stopped mid-flight. The system hacks the frequency of the drone, halts it and sends it back to where it came from. It's the first prison in the world to be using a drone-detecting fence, called 'Sky Fence'.

He has a knack for seeing treasure in a mountain of trash. Every week, Royd Bisiwasi goes to dump sites and restaurants to collect rubbish that would have otherwise landed up in landfills. He creates objects of beauty from waste and puts food on the table and provides a home for his family. The family makes art, toys, even furniture. This order of 200 giraffes is destined for the United States. It will net them about $600 - much higher than the average monthly salary here.

Many might wonder why bother with study skills tutorials. Well… those many people who might be wondering why they should spend more time to sharpen their study skills, are mostly accused of not being successful at accomplishing hard tasks. And learning is one of those hard tasks.
I have lectured and preached my students to the point where they got bored over the importance of study skills.
With all the distractions that we are surrounded with these days, including but not limited to, watching TV, spending time one Facebook, hanging out with friends and many other tempting and luring distractions that are beckoning at us day and night to have our time wasted away, it is very hard to spend time studying and learning new things. Though those things that cause distractions, if used right and properly, can aid you to learn faster.
It doesn’t take focus and determination only to stay on track. It takes more than that. You must be armed and equipped with the right skills to have your life managed well.
I think what I wrote above is convincing enough to have you watch the videos on #Study_Skills.
Well… if not. Then I can’t tell you more tonight it’s been a long day and I’d rather hit the bed than type stupid things on my computer.
Good night to you all and sleep well

OK, it's past its sell-by date, but this is – or was – food. Grown, produced, processed and discarded; a super-size serving of stinking waste.

Paul Killoughery, Managing Director, Bio Collectors
“It's amazing how much food is thrown out, and it's amazing how long it's taken the message to get through. If you don't have to eat it, don't buy it.”

Overproduction is a fact of the modern food industry. Most of the surplus - good nutritious stuff - goes to waste. But here, there’s another way. At the FareShare charity they take the surplus and use it to feed the hungry.

Lindsay Boswell, Chief Executive, FareShare
“The thing that really drives us nuts is it's going to waste whilst there are people going hungry. We feed, at the moment, half a million people a week – half a million people a week - with this food; we do that to seven thousand frontline charity and community groups.”

Which is good news here at the Melton Learning Hub, where disadvantaged kids get good fresh food.

Sarah Cox, Manager, Melton Learning Hub
“Just for our kids, it means they get a hot meal… they definitely get a hot meal every day. Lots of different circumstances the young people come to us in and this is a brilliant way of using food that would, as you say, go to waste.”

Tackling the issue will mean dumping less food and doing more with whatever goes in the bin. Here it’s used to make valuable fertiliser to generate gas and electricity.

But most of our discarded food still goes to the incinerator or to landfill - perhaps the definition of waste in a hungry world.

Did you know?

‘Sell-by’ dates are aimed at the shopkeepers rather than shoppers. They indicate how long the food should remain on sale. A ‘use-by’ date is a really important one to take note of -after this date, the food may not be safe to eat.
