The story of Osiris' death is a very strange one, but all Egyptian myths are. Essentially, Osiris either kicked Set or had an affair with his consort Nephthys, so Set took revenge on Osiris by killing him, cutting his body into pieces, and scattering them across Egypt. Osiris' consort Isis then gathers them all and, with the help of magic, restores his body. This enables her to be impregnated by him, conceiving the god Horus. There are many different accounts regarding different details of the story.
Some sources say that Set built a box and tricked Osiris into getting in, sealing it shut and weighing it down with lead, then dumping him in the Nile. Others say that Osiris' phallus was eaten by a fish. Still more differ in the amount of pieces Osiris was cut into, varying from 14, 26, and 42 pieces. The tradition of scattering the body parts of a god and praying for them is similar to other pagan traditions including the story of Semiramis and Nimrod.
