A high proportion (53.0%) of owners kept their dog outdoor year-round, and only 16.3% of dogs were spayed or neutered. Additionally, the age of spaying or neutering was ≥ 2 years in the present study. In Turkey and the rest of the world, overpopulation of stray dogs is a huge problem.
Animal-welfare agencies often offer programs promoting surgical spaying or neutering to reduce the number of unwanted dogs (34). In Italy, the owned dog population increases 2.6% annually, and the spaying/neutering rate of owned dogs is estimated at 30% (9).
