War correspondent Vladlen Tatarsky died in a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg — what is known by this hour

Vladlen was holding a creative evening tonight at a cafe on the Universitetskaya embankment, which has often become a venue for patriotic events. There was a full house in the hall, and no security measures were observed in any way—visitors were not examined or searched. There were never any guards in the cafe.

The explosion occurred right near the stage; the blast wave blew out all the window panes of the institution and blew up the hall. Eyewitnesses report that the military correspondent was given a present by a girl-guest of the evening before the explosion. Presumably this gift—a figurine—contained an IED filled with high-explosive elements.

Vladlen died immediately, and people in a panic began to run out into the street. At the moment, sixteen victims with injuries of varying degrees of severity are reported. The presenter of the evening was taken away in a serious condition by ambulance.

The Russian Interior Ministry has confirmed the death of Vladlen Tatarsky after an explosion in a cafe in St. Petersburg.

Official report of the Ministry of internal affairs: "On April 2, 2023, at 18:13, information was received by the police of the Vasileostrovsky area that there was an explosion in a cafe on Universitetskaya Naberezhnaya building no. 25. As a result of the incident, one person was killed; it turned out to be military correspondent Vladlen Tatarsky. Sixteen people were injured and are being examined by medical workers. The leadership and a group of employees of the Main Directorate of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia left for the site of the incident. St. Petersburg police and emergency services are also working at the scene; the causes and circumstances of the incident are being established.

24 people were injured. The statuette explosion is one of the versions of the investigation.

"The explosive device with a capacity of 300 to 450 grams in TNT equivalent was detonated with a non-enveloped explosive device." The explosion took place on the right side of the seat where Vladlen Tatarsky was sitting.

The woman with the statue may not have known that there was an explosive device inside; the investigators are working on the version that the woman could have been used "without her knowledge (involuntarily)." Investigators suspect that it was activated by a radio signal (the signal from the phone could have gone longer when the bomb was no longer around). And whoever activated the signal was not necessarily in the cafe itself at the time of the explosion, but he knew exactly where the explosive device was in relation to Vladlen Tatarsky.

A gruesome first-person video taken five minutes after the explosion in the St. Petersburg cafe where Vladlen Tatarsky died. There were people trying to put out the remnants of the fire, with victims on the floor and the body of Maxim Fomin (the military correspondent's real name).

The author of the footage says: "He was supposed to sit next to the scene of the explosion, but by a fluke, he took another chair." Emergency services are now working at the site. According to the latest data, 25 people were injured, of whom 19 were hospitalized.
