The conflict with Trump over Greenland could push Europe to a massive sell-off of American securities, Bloomberg reports, citing an analysis by Deutsche Bank.

According to the head of the bank's currency research, George Saravelos, Europe is the largest creditor of the US - European countries own about $8 trillion worth of American bonds and stocks, almost twice as much as the rest of the world.

Against the backdrop of undermining the geoeconomic stability of the Western alliance, it becomes unclear why Europe should continue to play the role of America's main creditor. Recent events, according to him, could accelerate the redistribution of assets to the detriment of the dollar.

Saravelos says that if the conflict with the US continues to develop, Europe could theoretically start using not trade measures, but financial ones - reducing investments in American assets, changing the structure of reserves, and financing the US deficit less.

Even the expectation of such steps could cause strong fluctuations in the dollar's exchange rate, the US stock market, and interest rates, the German expert believes.

In the EU, amid worsening relations with Washington, there are concerns about excessive dependence on American gas.

This is reported by Politico.

After refusing Russian gas, the EU is increasingly relying on US LNG supplies, turning them into a "potential point of vulnerability in the context of deteriorating transatlantic relations".

According to the publication, currently about a quarter of the EU's gas comes from the US, and by the end of the decade, this share could approach half - if Europeans continue to limit Russian gas imports.

In Brussels, there are fears that the new gas dependence could be used by the US as a tool of foreign policy pressure. One high-ranking EU diplomat directly admits that the risk of reducing or suspending supplies in the event of a further escalation of the conflict "should be taken into account".

"Dependence on American gas has created a potentially high-risk geopolitical vulnerability," said Ana Maria Jaller-Macarewicz, an analyst at the Institute of Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.

According to her, excessive reliance on LNG from the US contradicts the EU's official strategy of diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on external suppliers.

After 2022, the share of Russian gas in EU imports fell from 50% to about 12% - mainly due to American liquefied gas, the publication notes. The largest importers of American LNG were France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

Amid high energy prices and limited global gas supply - and also in view of the refusal of Russian energy carriers - European countries are effectively "left with no room for manoeuvre".

As Politico sources admit, in the short term, Europe "really has no alternatives", even despite the threat of conflict with a key supplier - the US.
