🌟 Spotlight on Dr. Hana Abebe Gebreselassie: Advancing Pediatric Surgical Care Globally 🌟
We are incredibly proud to highlight the achievements of Dr. Hana Abebe Gebreselassie, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. Dr. Hana is currently making waves on the global stage as a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford under the prestigious Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx).
Her groundbreaking research focuses on pediatric surgical care, specifically addressing congenital anomalies in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). During her fellowship, she is collaborating with Professor Kokila Lakoo at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, leading a project titled:
“Developing and Validating a Neonatal Screening Tool for Congenital Anomalies in LMIC Settings.”
This innovative project seeks to design a practical, physical-examination-based screening tool to enable early diagnosis and referral for newborns with congenital disorders in resource-limited settings. The initiative is poised to enhance neonatal survival rates and significantly impact child health outcomes in Ethiopia and beyond.

On November 29, 2024, our esteemed colleague Dr.Gizachew successfully concluded his PhD with an open doctoral defense. His exceptional performance earned him an excellent assessment from the examination board.
Dr. Gizachew's dissertation, titled “Genomic Diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Strains Circulating in Addis Ababa Metropolitan Area, Ethiopia,” explores critical insights into tuberculosis strains in one of Ethiopia's most populous regions. His research contributes significantly to our understanding of genomic diversity and its implications for public health strategies and interventions.

College Inaugurates Modern Medical Waste Incinerator Donated by Japanese Government
In a significant step towards enhancing environmental sustainability and public health, a state-of-the-art medical waste incinerator donated by the Japanese government was inaugurated at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College on 5th Dec. 2024. The handover ceremony took place in the presence of the college’s leadership, who expressed gratitude for the generous support from Japan.
The newly installed incinerator boasts a capacity to process 70 kilograms of waste per hour, marking a pivotal modernization of the college's waste disposal system. This advanced technology is expected to significantly improve the handling of medical waste, ensuring safer and more efficient disposal while reducing the environmental footprint.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Sisay Sirgu, Provost of the college, highlighted the importance of this development:
"This incinerator represents a transformative improvement in our college’s waste management system. It reflects our commitment to sustainability and the health of our community."
The initiative underscores the growing partnership between Ethiopia and Japan in advancing healthcare and environmental initiatives. The new facility is expected to set a benchmark for effective medical waste management in similar institutions across the Country.
Conference on Mental Health Recovery

The 2nd One Health Conference, titled “One Health Approach to Mental Health: Mental Health Recovery in Times of Crisis”, was successfully held on December 6-7, 2024, at the Grand Palace Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Organized by the Department of Psychiatry at SPHMMC, the Center for International Health (CIH LMU), and the Global Mental Health Research Group of Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, the event brought together key stakeholders including policymakers, researchers, practitioners, caregivers, and individuals with lived experience.

Her Excellency Dr. Selamawit Ayele, NCD and Mental Health Desk Lead at the Ministry of Health, delivered the opening address, emphasizing the need for collaborative approaches to tackle mental health crises in Ethiopia.

The conference focused on three key themes: Rehabilitation and Recovery, The One-Health Approach to Conflict Response, and Innovative Approaches to Mental Health Recovery. Keynote speeches and panel discussions provided actionable strategies and insights to enhance mental health recovery services. The event was a resounding success, fostering meaningful connections and promoting resilience in times of crisis.

Special thanks to Dr. Surafel Worku for leading the organizing team, and heartfelt gratitude to all contributors for making the conference a success. The insights gained will play a pivotal role in strengthening Ethiopia's mental health services moving forward.
