🗓 On July 28, the 3rd Russia–Africa Conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club and the South African Institute of International Affairs opened in Pretoria under the theme "Realpolitik Responses in a Fractured World: Rethinking Russia-South Africa Ties in global and African Context."
Over twenty experts in international relations, political science, economics, and other fields are taking part in the full-day discussion.
The event features four thematic sessions:
🔹 The G20 and BRICS: Assessing Strategic Roles in a Changing Global Order
🔹 Humanitarian Cooperation and the Role of Historical Memory in Russia’s Relations with South Africa and Other African Countries
🔹 Bilateral Relations Between Russia and South Africa: Current State and Prospects
🔹 Trump and the World Order
🎙 In his welcome address to the participants, Russian Ambassador to South Africa Roman Ambarov stated, among other things:
"Conceptually, today's event goes very much in line with the provisions of the Action Plan, approved at the highest level by the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, and with the BRICS Summit Kazan Declaration.
In a nutshell, Russia's official position is clear and simple: Moscow considers South Africa and other African countries as its natural allies, and is ready to “contribute to the further development of Africa as an authentic and influential centre of global development.
☝️ We believe that Africa is not an arena for yet another geopolitical scramble, but a space of mutually beneficial cooperation.
However, some external forces from both sides of the Atlantic seem to be troubled by how Russia-Africa relations have been recently developing in the bilateral and multilateral domains.
In our turbulent times, such in-person gatherings of professionals are especially important to debate timely and challenging questions".

✍️ From the article titled "Don’t Censor Our Voices, Don’t Restrain Our Freedom! The Cry of BRICS Journalists" by Dr. Nonkululeko Mantula, CEO and founder of the GSQ Media House, South Africa
“On the 15th of July 2025, the European Union imposed sanctions on nine individuals, and six entities accused of “being responsible for Russia’s destabilising actions abroad, including through “Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference”. <…>
The sanctioned individuals and entities are now subject not only to a travel ban on EU territories, but also will have their assets frozen and prohibited to the provision of funds or economic resources. <…>
The commendable stance of the #BRICS bloc has been seen as a threat by Western countries who have for decades benefited from the resources and systematically designed vulnerabilities of countries in Africa and the Global South. This has resulted in fear mongering, silencing, maiming and sanctioning.
All this is evident that there is a shear pursuit for dominance and perpetual oppression by the West to tame the growing strength of the Global South. <…>
Freedom of speech has been the pride of modern democracy… yet the EU’s sanctions against the BRICS Journalists Association are a knock below the belt for both journalism and democracy itself.
☝️ Journalists must take a stand, collaborate efforts, and amplify their voices against every unscrupulous act of the West to silence them in reporting the lived experiences of the people and speaking truth to power.”

“For the study of Arctic natural processes, we have constructed an ice-resistant self-propelled platform named “North Pole.” This is a unique vessel, the only one of its kind in the world. It has enabled scientists to access high-latitude Arctic regions that were previously unreachable. The data collected is now crucial for improving navigation along the Northern Sea Route – a key transport artery and logistics corridor.”
Research in #Antarctica is also advancing, Mishustin underscored.
“Last year, we inaugurated a new year-round research complex called “Vostok”.
Located in the heart of the continent and built in under five years, the facility spans nearly 3,000 square metres, with scientific labs, residential areas, energy systems, and technical units.”

🇷🇺🇿🇦 Chair of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko met with Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of South Africa Angela Thokozile Didiza in Geneva. The conversation took place ahead of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
Strengthening ties with African countries, including through parliamentary channels, is one of our priorities, Valentina Matvienko noted. She emphasised that relations between Russia and South Africa are successfully developing on the principles of strategic partnership, equality and mutual respect.
The Chair of the Federation Council pointed out that Russia and South Africa are actively cooperating in the #G20, which South Africa chairs in 2025, as well as within the #UN and #BRICS, and other international organizations.
"The authority of South Africa in the international arena is growing year after year. South Africa's presidency of the G20 this year is a very important event, to which we attach great importance and view it as a good opportunity to strengthen the role of the Global South in the global economy, to "highlight" the advancement of the African continent as one of the centers of the multipolar world," Valentina Matvienko said.

🎙 Remarks by Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Birichevskiy at the 3rd Russia-Africa conference of the Valdai Club and the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), Session 1: G20 and BRICS: Assessing Strategic Roles in an Evolving Global Order (28 July 2025)
💬 Dmitry Birichevskiy: South Africa’s Presidency in the G20 is of great importance for quite a number of reasons. It is the first time that an African country has assumed leadership of this key international economic forum. And this is exactly one of the manifestations of the emergence of a new world order. <...>
South Africa is steadily setting the tone for G20 endeavors with a focus on urgent issues of economic growth, food security, artificial intelligence, debt burden, and critical minerals. We support Pretoria’s priorities and strive to contribute to tangible practical results. <...>
Against the backdrop of rising geo-economic fragmentation, G20’s activities attract increasing attention. The Forum adopted its present form in 2008 — at a challenging time for the world economy – and since then proved itself an effective “crisis manager” on numerous occasions. G20 has remained resilient and efficient even at the peak of Western anti-Russian hysteria in 2022-2023. Today it continues to develop very much-needed consensus solutions on pressing economic and global issues.
🤝 The successive chairmanships of #BRICS countries in 2022-2025 made a significant input to the productive work of the G20.
The cycle of the BRICS leaderships in the G20 coincided with the steady strengthening of its positions in economic affairs. Today, BRICS and G7’ shares in the global GDP are measured as 40 and 29 percent respectively. <...>
South African Presidency has predictably placed G20 emphasis on the African agenda — a step that we fully support. Amidst the alarming developments in the global economy, situation in African countries looks particularly precarious. They routinely have to deal with the aftermaths of colonialism, thriving neocolonial practices, and inequitable division of labor. <...>
Africa will only benefit from boosting cooperation with BRICS as a conduit for the priorities of the Global South, including at major multilateral fora such as G20. BRICS membership now comprises South Africa, Egypt and Ethiopia, who seek to promote both national objectives and pan-African agenda. Since 2025, Nigeria and Uganda have joined in as partner states. In addition, further enlargement of the New Development Bank through African shareholders seems rather promising.
🌐 Russia is a responsible contributor to the development agenda, both bilaterally and at international venues. Our focus is on maximizing the potential of Russian-African partnership.
We look forward to further fruitful cooperation and offer our African friends effective tools to enhance their economic sovereignty.
☝️ In current difficult geopolitical situation sovereignty is the key to the true economic and political independence.

💬 Excerpts from the opening remarks by Phumzile Mazibuko, Chief Director of South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation, at the 3rd Russia-Africa conference of the Valdai Discussion Club and the South African Institute of International Affairs titled "Realpolitik Responses in a Fractured World: Rethinking Russia-South Africa Ties in global and African Context"
• Now, South Africa is currently chairing the #G20 presidency, and for the next six months now, we have a seat at the world's table. South Africa has prioritized issues such as debt sustainability, global financial reform, access to technology, and inclusive economic recovery, as we champion the representation of Africa in global decision-making structures, including the full integration of the African Union into the G20 framework.
• We are pushing for a new international development funding agreement that resolves historical inequalities while also preparing the Global South to respond to future shocks with resilience. We are truly grateful for Russia's support for all our G20 presidency priorities.
❗️ Our relationship with the Russian Federation is rooted in history. The Soviet Union supported the anti-apartheid movement when others didn’t, and that legacy is real and deserving of respect. During a recent address at St. Petersburg State University, our Deputy President, Mr. Paul Mashatile, stated, and I quote: "We view the Russian Federation not only as a strategic partner, but also as a historic friend, whose sacrifices are deeply ingrained in the broader narrative of Africa's liberation."
• In 2025, we must build upon that legacy and strengthen our cooperation in trade, science, technology, research, and innovation. South Africa has elevated its engagement with the Russian Federation and this year held bilateral economic engagements at a high level, including a visit to Moscow by our Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Ronald Lamola, to co-chair the 18th ITEC session. We also had a working visit to the Russian Federation by Deputy President Paul Mashatile, where he engaged at the highest level with the leadership, including a courtesy call on President Putin, and also attended the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where he addressed the Russia-Africa Business Dialogue and delivered a public lecture on South Africa's G20 presidency, emphasizing themes of multipolarity, inclusive development, and African opportunity.
🇷🇺🇿🇦 These engagements show concrete commitment to deepening ties and expanding trade and economic relations between South Africa and Russia.

“Like a bee, I suck honey from a flower garden to bring grateful tribute to Mother Russia with my labour.”
#OTD 208 years ago, Ivan #Aivazovsky was born, one of the greatest masters of marine art ever.
He was born into the family of a destitute Armenian merchant in the #Crimean city of Feodosia. His talent was discovered at a very early age. He was taken on as an apprentice by a local architect and later sent to a gymnasium in Simferopol. His first success came in 1835 when his sketch “Air Over Sea” received a silver medal in an art competition.
In 1846, #Aivazovsky built his own workshop in his native Feodosia and spent most of his time there, behind closed doors, producing one picture after another. He didn’t even need to go outdoors – he’d already seen so much of his beloved environment that he was able to paint it by memory.
🌊 His greatest masterpiece is considered to be “The Ninth Wave,” finished in 1850. An early dawn after a night storm, the first rays of light touch the surface of the raging ocean and the fearsome ninth wave is ready to crush a small group of people struggling for their lives.
One of the most prominent Russian artists of his time, Aivazovsky was also popular outside Russia. He held numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and the United States. During his almost 60-year career, he created around 6,000 paintings, making him one of the most prolific artists of his time.

❗️In 2025, Russia celebrates 8️⃣0️⃣ years since the launch of the nuclear industry. The starting point of its history was Aug 20, 1945, when a Special Committee to manage work on the utilization of uranium #AtomicEnergy was established in the USSR.
👉 The Soviet Union became the pioneer in the peaceful use of nuclear technologies and Russia remains the global industry leader to this day.
Our specialists launched the world's first nuclear power plant in Obninsk, opening up access to a new powerful source of clean energy for people. The first nuclear icebreaker, the first tokamak were also built in our country, and these are the main milestones of only the first 15 years of the Soviet nuclear industry.
As part of the anniversary celebration, on Sept 25-29, 2025, Moscow will host an event to bring together the entire nuclear community and the general public for the first time – #WorldAtomicWeek. It will include a large-scale international forum on nuclear and related industries, a scientific and educational youth festival, an exhibition and a concert dedicated to #NuclearIndustry Worker's Day (celebrated in Russia on Sept 28).
