🕊 On Nelson Mandela International Day, we honour the life and legacy of a man who became a global symbol of freedom, dignity, and reconciliation – Nelson Mandela.

🤝 On this day, we also remember the deep solidarity between our countries during the anti-apartheid struggle.

While many Western governments supported the apartheid regime as a Cold War ally, the Soviet Union was one of the few world powers that gave unwavering support to the liberation movement in South Africa. The USSR provided political, financial, military, and humanitarian assistance to the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP).

💬 As Vladimir Shubin, a Soviet Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee official, noted:
"With our help, the armed struggle significantly contributed to the collapse of apartheid... The appearance of well-trained ANC fighters with modern weapons shocked the racist regime and inspired the oppressed majority."

The USSR also led diplomatic efforts at the United Nations, co-authoring and supporting key resolutions like the 1960 Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples and the 1963 Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

During his 1999 state visit to Moscow, Mandela said he felt profound gratitude for the “solidarity of the Russian people in the South African fight against apartheid and for freedom.”

After the first democratic elections in 1994, South Africa and Russia opened a new chapter of friendship and cooperation. Today, our nations continue to work together in the UN, #BRICS, and the #G20, promoting sovereignty and equality.

🎙 Address by Ambassador of Russia to South Africa Roman Ambarov on the occasion of Mandela Day (July 18, 2025)

💬 Dear friends,

On July 18, we celebrate #MandelaDaya holiday officially declared by the United Nations to honor the legacy of the South African statesman and one of the most outstanding champions of human rights, Nelson Mandela.

The name Mandela is, without exaggeration, familiar to every person living in the former Soviet republics. For two decades, the slogan “Freedom for Mandela!” echoed through the media and peaceful demonstrations, while our country remained the only major power that consistently refused to engage with the criminal racist regime.

👉 The Soviet Union not only provided substantial financial support to the South African liberation movement but also assisted in training military personnel.

Nelson Mandela praised #RussiaSouthAfrica ties in the times of the struggle against apartheid:
"In a difficult time, Russia became a second home for many of us. Hundreds of young South Africans received an education here — an opportunity denied to them in their own country. Many of our cadres received military training that turned them into skilled fighters for freedom and justice. <...> For the help in liberating the entire South African nation from an inhumane system, we say from the bottom of our hearts: 'Spasibo bolshoe!'" [Thank you very much in Russian].

The friendship forged in those challenging times for South Africans continues to live on between our nations today — thanks in no small part to Nelson Mandela himself.

At the heart of Mandela Day, as established by the UN, lies a principle of action, not words – people are encouraged to perform acts of charity and help those in need. The Russian Embassy in South Africa fully embraces this spirit: as part of this commemorative occasion, Russian diplomats will provide assistance and support to three South African children social facilities.

🤝 I extend my warmest congratulations to all our South African friends on this special day and wish you well-being, prosperity, and strength in pursuing your ideals.

🕊 In celebration of #MandelaDay2025, the Embassy of Russia in South Africa welcomed children from the Mamelodi Bophelong Orphanage and the New Jerusalem Children's Home for a special #RussianMovieNight.

The children were treated to a contemporary Russian animated film, “Ruslan and Lyudmila: More Than a Fairy Tale,” based on the classic poem by Alexander #Pushkin.

🩵 One young guest shared her thoughts after the screening:
“It’s an absolutely wonderful fairy tale! I loved the bravery of Ruslan and the beauty of his love, Lyudmila. The cartoon is so nice, kind, and funny!”

The evening also included a taste of traditional Russian snacks – the children learned what bliny and sushki are made of, explored the Russian alphabet through a special art exhibition, and received small souvenirs from the Embassy.

As Nelson Mandela once said: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

🎉 Tetris turns 40! 🎮

#DYK One of the most influential video games in history was created on July 18, 1985, by Soviet software engineer Alexey Pajitnov.

Tetris was inspired by Pentomino, Pajitnov's favorite puzzle game. Its name is a blend of the Greek prefix "tetra-" (meaning "four") and tennis, his favorite sport.

🌍 The game became a global sensation with over 250 million copies sold!

Since its debut, Alexey Pajitnov has received numerous awards, including the International Game Developers Association’s First Penguin Award in 2007.

📌 Fun facts about Tetris:
• It was the first video game played in space.
• Psychologists say it helps reduce stress and PTSD symptoms. In 1994, journalist Jeffrey Goldsmith coined the term "Tetris effect" — when a focused activity starts appearing in your imagination.
• In 2015, Tetris was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
