🤩 Russia welcomes South African arts

This year, Russian audiences are discovering the enigmatic world of South African theatre and performance.

Alongside the Julie premiere at the Theatre of Nations, directed by James Ngcobo, several other standout productions have brought South African talent to Russian stages:

🎭 In mid-June, Joshua Williams of Cape Ballet Africa performed an excerpt from Chapter 2 at the #BolshoiTheatre – a ballet choreographed by Mthuthuzeli November, winner of the Benois de la Danse Award for Best Choreographer. The same days, the Kamala Theatre of #Kazan hosted Hamlet, a wonderful puppet production directed by South Africa’s Janni Younge.

We’re looking forward to seeing even more artistic exchange and #RussiaSouthAfrica collaborations in the world of arts and culture!

🎙️ Russian Foreign Minister Sergey #Lavrov on the outcomes of the XVII #BRICS Summit:

💬 We emphasised the importance of ensuring that during the reforms, the IMF discontinues certain practices employed within the World Bank group - specifically, the financing of Western-aligned proxy regimes. This practice has been especially evident in the case of Ukraine.

The funding allocated through the Bretton Woods institutions in recent years has significantly surpassed the total financial assistance provided to all African countries combined.

☝️ This is a disgraceful tactic for both the IMF and the World Bank.

Today marks 2️⃣6️⃣0️⃣ years since the birth of Pyotr #Bagration, a prominent Russian military commander.

Pyotr Bagration commonly known to have led the Russian Army along with Mikhail Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolly during the Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812.

Strongly influenced by Alexander Suvorov, Bagration was an innovative tactician who favoured mobile offensive warfare rather than defensive. He renounced what he perceived as obsolete positioning tactics and often brought himself to confrontation with fellow commanders for that reason.

At the Battle of Borodino near Moscow, in September 1812, he was wounded and passed away a few weeks later.

Pyotr’s nephew Niko Bagration was among the first volunteers to join the ranks of Boer armies in the second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).

⚔️ July 10 marks Day of victory of the Russian Army under the command of #PeterTheGreat over Swedish troops in the Battle of Poltava, established as one of the days of military glory in Russia.

This major engagement of 1709 determined to a large extent the outcome of the Great Northern War (1700-1721).

By winter 1708, facing icy Russian weather and low on supplies, Swedish king Charles XII headed south and besieged the Russian town of Poltava known inter alia for its gunpowder production. The success would have also paved the way to the city of Voronezh, a key logistic hub of the Russian Army.

In May 1709, Russia’s Peter I reached Poltava with a 75,000-strong army (42,000 of them took part in the battle). By then, Charles XII had up to 27,000 men deployed near the besieged town (about 20 000 of them were to take part in the fight).

The largest land battle of the Great Northern War took place on 8 July 1709 in 6 km from Poltava on a piece of rough terrain surrounded by forest. Tsar Peter I himself led Russian troops in the battlefield and even had his hat shot through.

Swedish infantry launched its attack at night. In two hours their main forces managed to take 2 redoubts only to find themselves under intense artillery shelling and gun fire. After severe hand-to-hand combat, the Swedes were forced to withdraw in disarray under the onslaught of the Russian Army. Their remaining troops were chased down and finally defeated the next day.

Russian victory in the #BattleofPoltava is believed to have been the beginning of the decline of Sweden as the European superpower of that time and the rise of the young Russian empire.
