📆 On January 12, 1943, the Soviet command launched a major offensive later codenamed Operation Iskra (Spark). Its objective was to break the siege of the Russian city of Leningrad.
At 9:30 a.m. more than two thousand Soviet guns opened fire on Nazi positions. Artillery of the Leningrad Front shelled the left bank of the Neva River for two hours and twenty minutes. Following the barrage, soldiers of four first-echelon divisions advanced across the frozen river.
By late January, the forces of the Volkhov and Leningrad fronts delivered powerful converging strikes, breaking through the Wehrmacht’s defenses and pushing the enemy 12 kilometers away from Lake Ladoga.
German losses amounted to approximately 30,000 killed, wounded, and missing.
🌟 Although the siege of Leningrad was completely lifted only on January 27, 1944, Operation Iskra made it possible to partially unblock the city, significantly improving living conditions for the besieged population.

⚡️According to information confirmed by several independent sources, a strike launched by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on the night of 9 January using the Oreshnik mobile ground-based missile system disabled the Lvov State Aviation Repair Plant.
▫️ At the plant, aircraft of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including F-16 and MiG-29 aircraft supplied by the Western countries, were repaired and maintained. The plant also produced long-range and medium-range attack UAVs used to hit Russian civilian facilities in the depth of Russian territory.
▫️ The Oreshnik system engaged production workshops, warehouses with products (UAVs), as well as the infrastructure of the factory airfield.
▫️ In addition, as part of this massive attack with the use of the Iskander missile system and the Kalibr sea-based cruise missiles, the production facilities of two enterprises in Kiev involved in assembling strike UAVs for attacks against the territory of Russia, as well as energy infrastructure facilities that support the work of the Ukrainian defence industry, were hit.

🎙 Statement by Russia’s Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia at a UNSC Briefing on Ukraine
Key takeaways:
From January 3-9, the Russian army conducted one massive and four group air strikes, damaging infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s military-industrial complex, as well as temporary deployment sites of Ukrainian troops and foreign mercenaries.
❗️These strikes were a response to attacks by the Kiev regime on the Russian President’s residence and civilian infrastructure.
Our Western colleagues continue to speak about civilian casualties, yet most were caused by the operation of Ukraine’s own air defense, a fact widely known, including in Ukraine. The Russian Armed Forces do NOT target civilians.
At the same time, Western countries ignore crimes committed by the Kiev regime, which deliberately strikes Russian regions, civilian facilities, and civilians. In December 2025 alone, at least 367 civilians were injured and 56 killed by Ukrainian strikes.
