🎨Every year on December 8, the world celebrates International #ArtistDay – a day dedicated to painters, illustrators, and all those whose creativity helps us see the world from new perspectives.

The holiday was established by #UNESCO in 2007 at the initiative of the International Association β€œArt of the Peoples of the World,” founded in 1988 by artist and philanthropist Nikolai Kornilov.

The history of painting in Russia begins with the adoption of Christianity, when iconography became the foundation of artistic tradition. Masters like Andrei Rublev shaped not only religious art, but the cultural identity of the nation.

Under Peter the Great, Russia saw the birth of its first formal art school – the Imperial Academy of Arts – marking a new era of artistic development.

The State Russian Museum is the largest collection of Russian art in the world, even larger than Moscow’s Tretyakov Gallery. Its collection includes around 400,000 works from the 10th to 21st century.

🌟On December 9, Russia celebrates the Heroes of the Fatherland Day.

Today we honour the Heroes of the Soviet Union, Heroes of the Russian Federation, recipients of the Order of St. George and the Order of Glory, people whose outstanding deeds and accomplishments will forever be written into the history of our country.

The date of the holiday is dedicated to Saint George. On this day in 1769, Empress Catherine II established the highest military award – the Order of St. George, which was bestowed upon heroes who showed exceptional bravery in battle.

On April 16, 1934, the Central Executive Committee of the USSR established the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union for collective and personal feats in service to the Soviet state and society.

πŸŽ–οΈIn 1992 the title Hero of the Russian Federation was established. In 2000, the Order of St. George was restored by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation as the highest military award.

πŸ“† #OTD, on 10 December 1982, Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, a landmark moment that strengthened the global campaign against apartheid.

As one of the most powerful moral voices of his generation, Tutu used his platform to call for justice, dignity, and non-violent resistance. His Nobel Prize amplified international pressure on the apartheid regime and inspired activists worldwide.

🀝 During the struggle, Tutu engaged with a wide range of international partners, including the Soviet Union, which provided political and material support to anti-apartheid movements. Alongside other freedom fighters, he also acknowledged the importance of global solidarity, including the USSR’s role, in isolating apartheid South Africa and strengthening the liberation movement.
