🎙 Highlights from Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's remarks and answers to media questions during his annual news conference on the Russian diplomacy outcomes in 2025

Russia will consistently uphold its interests without infringing on the legitimate rights of others or allowing them to take liberties with our legitimate rights.

• The so-called isolation of Russia has failed, no matter what our ill-wishers may say. The landmark events of the year included the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, featuring a parade in Red Square and a large number of foreign guests in attendance.

• Russia remains committed to a diplomatic resolution of the Ukraine crisis. A review of the conflict's history, from its origins in 2014 and especially since 2022, reveals no shortage of goodwill from Russia regarding political settlements. Yet, on each occasion, our Western, primarily European, neighbours have taken deliberate steps to undermine any agreements.

• The US is currently the only Western country which is ready to address the task of eliminating the root causes of the Ukraine conflict that was largely created by Donald Trump's predecessor, the then US President Joe Biden and his administration.

• A reading of statements from European figures makes it clear that they are seriously preparing for a war against Russia, and they make little attempt to conceal it.

• If anyone wishes to talk, we will never refuse dialogue, even though we fully realise that reaching an agreement with the current generation of European leaders will most likely be impossible. They have entrenched themselves too deeply in a posture of hatred towards Russia.

• We have nothing to do with plans to seize Greenland. I have no doubts whatsoever that Washington knows that neither Russia nor China have such designs. It is not a matter of our concern. Our primary concern is establishing open and free Arctic cooperation within the Arctic Council, taking into account the interests of all participants in Arctic cooperation.

Eurasian security concerns the entire continent. It is impossible to fragment what is, in fact, a single geographical, geopolitical and geo-economic space. Until recently, those promoting the Euro-Atlantic concept were engaged in precisely such fragmentation. They created a “club” known as NATO, with the European Union as its appendage.

• If we are to discuss expanding the number of participants in the strategic stability talks and nuclear arms limitation at some point, we cannot ignore Britain and France. They are allies of the US and are bound by mutual obligations within NATO. Therefore, it is impossible to ignore their arsenals when considering the threats posed by the US nuclear arsenal.

🎙 Comment by Aide to the President Yury Ushakov regarding Vladimir Putin's meeting with US President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff (Moscow, 23 January 2026)

💬 The talks went on for approximately four hours and they were exceptionally in-depth, constructive, and constituted an extremely frank and heart-to-heart conversation [...]

Overall, the focus of the meeting between the President of Russia and US representatives was to obtain information resulting from the contacts the US had with the Ukrainians and Europeans in order to define further steps between our two countries.

In fact, an agreement on the next step in this direction has been reached. There was an agreement to hold the first meeting of a trilateral working group on security matters as soon as today, this Friday, 23 January, in Abu Dhabi, with Russia, the United States and Ukraine.

At the same time, Abu Dhabi will also serve as a venue for a meeting of the heads of a bilateral working group on economic matters. This is a bilateral group formed by Russia and the United States, and their respective heads are Kirill Dmitriev and Steve Witkoff.

The President of Russia has just given our delegation specific instructions taking into consideration all aspects of today's conversation with the United States.

Importantly, the participants in the conversation between the President of Russia and the Americans reaffirmed the fact that bringing about a lasting settlement would be unlikely without addressing the territorial issue based on the formula as agreed in Anchorage.

☝️ Vladimir Putin has emphasised Russia's sincere commitment to settling the Ukraine crisis by political and diplomatic means. But as long as this is not the case, Russia will persist in its consistent effort to achieve the special military operation's goals on the battlefield, where Russia's Armed Forces hold the strategic initiative.

🗓️ On January 25, 1759, the great Scottish poet Robert Burns was born in Alloway. His significance to national culture is eloquently illustrated by the famous saying: "When Scotland forgets Burns, then history will forget Scotland".

A great patriot of his country, Burns contributed to the awakening of Scottish national consciousness, writing about the fighters for freedom of his native land and its heroic past. The poet's vibrant and intimate connection with the common people and his unique perspective on the surrounding reality allowed him to convey the distinctive atmosphere of Scottish life and the freedom-loving spirit of the northerners.

Burns's poetry also received wide recognition in Russia. The first translations of his poems into Russian appeared in the first half of the 19th century, and literary critic Vissarion Belinsky noted at the time that his works "constitute a rich treasury of lyric poetry." In 1947, Burns's poems were introduced to Soviet readers in new, melodic translations by Samuil Marshak, who, according to Aleksandr Tvardovsky, "made Burns Russian while leaving him Scottish." It was largely thanks to these translations that Robert Burns's poetry gained unprecedented popularity in our country, and the majority of foreign editions in the collection of Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway are in Russian.

The poet's work also found a resonance in Soviet cinema: songs based on his poems were featured in the popular films. Recognition of Burns's talent in our country was also reflected in a commemorative postage stamp issued in the USSR for his bicentennial. This stamp can also be seen in the Museum's collection in Alloway.

On January 25, “The Scottish Sun” newspaper published an article titled “Russian diplomat snapped 'spying' on seized oil tanker off Scots coast after US raid”.

Two days before the article’s publication, its author requested clarification regarding the Consul General’s visit on January 20 to the town of Burghead, close to which the tanker Marinera with Russian sailors on board is anchored. The Consulate General immediately sent the journalist the following comment:

“Reportedly, there are Russian citizens on board the tanker Marinera, which has been in British territorial waters near Scottish shore for over a week.

According to the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, it is the duty of a consul to protect the interests of nationals of the state they represent. The Convention also guarantees the right of consular access to such persons.

Despite our official appeals, we still have no information about these persons or consular access to them. So, the Consul General travelled to Burghead to at least verify the location of the tanker. We make no secret of it, so we posted photographs on social media”.

Not a word of our commentary was included in the article. It is brimming with anti-Russian arguments of varying degrees of absurdity. To support these claims, the newspaper found nothing better to do than post the photographs from the Consulate General’s social media, without even asking our permission to use the images.

In light of the above, the Consulate General confirms that the Russian side will continue to take all legal measures to obtain information about the current location and health condition of the captured Russian sailors, get consular access to them, and ensure their prompt return to their homeland. Protecting the interests of Russian citizens in the consular district remains a key priority for our diplomats.

🇷🇺 On 27 January, President Vladimir Putin took part in commemorative events dedicated to the 82nd anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi siege.

Russia's President visited the Nevsky Pyatachok military-historical complex in the Leningrad Region, where he laid flowers at the Landmark Stone monument.

Nevsky Pyatachok is a small bridgehead on the left bank of the Neva River, where Soviet soldiers fought against superior enemy forces from the first days of the blockade, preventing them from advancing on Leningrad. In 1971, the Landmark Stone was unveiled at this site of fierce fighting in memory of the defenders of the Motherland who died on Nevsky Pyatachok.

The stone bears an inscription of a verse by poet and songwriter Robert Rozhdestvensky: "You who are alive, remember that we did not want to leave this land, and we have not left it. We fought to the death by the dark waters of the Neva. We have died so that you can live".

The President also visited the Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery, where he took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Motherland monument to commemorate the city residents and defenders laid to rest there.

About 420,000 residents of Leningrad, who died from starvation, cold and disease or perished in bombings and air raids, as well as 70,000 soldiers are buried in the 186 mass graves and 6,000 individual graves of the Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery. The words of poet Olga Bergholz, "No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten", are carved on the memorial wall behind the Motherland monument.

🕯 On 27 January Russian diplomats together with Russian compatriots living in the United Kingdom laid a wreath and flowers at the Soviet War Memorial in London to mark the 82nd anniversary of the lifting of the Nazi siege of Leningrad.

Members of the Russian community in Manchester also held a flower-laying ceremony at a plaque unveiled in 2020 in honoured memory of the Soviet soldiers, who gave their lives liberating Europe and in recognition of the brave people of the besieged Leningrad.

On the eve of this date, the Russian diplomatic mission's staff conveyed greetings of the Governor of Saint Petersburg (former Leningrad) Alexander Beglov to the veterans of the Great Patriotic War – residents of the besieged Leningrad, who currently live in the UK.

The Nazi German blockade of the city stands as one of the most tragic yet heroic chapters in the history of our country. It lasted from 8 September 1941 to 27 January 1944 — 872 days of extreme hardship, hunger and deprivation. Historians estimate that no more than 800,000 of the three million inhabitants of Leningrad and its surrounding areas survived the siege.

The feat of Leningraders has become a symbol of unbreakable will, courage and self-sacrifice. The memory of those who died in the blockade will remain in our hearts forever.
