🌍 Our Black History Month timeline would be incomplete without the Soviet period. As the country transitioned from the Russian Empire to the USSR, supporting Africa and people of African origin emerged as a distinctive strand of foreign policy rooted in sincere public sentiment.
This was visible as early as in 1920-1930s. Famous singer and London's resident Paul Robeson observed since his first visits to the USSR that strangers on the streets were keen to shake his hands as a sign of solidarity. Referring to Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia he noted that the head of Soviet diplomacy Maksim Litvinov "stood alone beside Haile Selassie in Geneva".
☝️ Later, support for colonised peoples' liberation movements and cooperation with newly independent states were major official principles of the Soviet foreign policy since 1950s.
The USSR proposed a declaration on decolonisation, introduced its first draft and was instrumental in getting the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1960 (the UK, the USA and some others abstained).
At the grassroots level, support for the right of self-determination and anti-racism was channeled through the Soviet Afro-Asian Solidarity Committee and promoted through arts.
At the same time the USSR welcomed thousands of Africans, and not just civic activists like the British African-Caribbean community leader Claudia Jones. Universities across the country, including iconic Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow, embraced students for them to bring precious knowledge back home. Around 60 thousand of them received Soviet degrees by 1991.

In general, the motto of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship includes such notions, it seems to me – justice and security. But how does all this relate to your actions in the last two and a half years, with the invasion of Ukraine? Where is justice, stability and security, including the security of Russia? Because there were no drone attacks on Russian territory, no shelling of Russian cities, and no foreign troops occupying Russian territory before the start of the special military operation – this did not happen.
💬 Vladimir Putin: I will start with Russia’s security because it is the most important thing for me.
You have mentioned drone attacks and so on. Yes, this was not the case, but there was a much worse situation. The situation was that we were constantly put in our place as we made constant and persistent proposals to establish contacts and relations with the countries of the Western.
And eventually that placing would have led Russia to the category of second-rate countries to only function as raw material appendages with the loss of the country's sovereignty to a certain degree and to a large extent.
In such a capacity Russia is unable not only to develop, it just cannot exist. <...>
Is it fair that you staged a government coup in complete disregard of international law and all the tenets of international law and the UN Charter? Is it fair that you financed a government coup in a foreign country, specifically Ukraine, and pushed the situation there towards a hot phase? Is this fair in terms of global security?
Is it fair that you violated your commitments within the OSCE, when all Western countries signed a document stating that no country may ensure its security at the expense of other countries?
We warned you against doing this – against expanding NATO – because it infringed on our security. But you did it nevertheless. Is this fair?

We shall persist in our observation. At present, we witness the utilisation of a quasi-judicial mechanism by the British establishment to embed within the public consciousness an anti-Russia interpretation of the 2018 incidents.
This endeavour is intended to perpetuate the dissemination of Russophobia. This is because all matters related to the Kiev regime, Ukraine, and the situation surrounding Vladimir Zelensky have begun to operate counterproductively for official London. The narrative has reached a saturation point, becoming intolerable for the people. <...>
Yet another attempt to associate the events in Amesbury with the provocation surrounding Sergey or Yulia Skripal has been noted. It appears there is a renewed effort to incite anti-Russia sentiments within the British community, given the involvement of a British citizen who perished.
Despite all the bias, investigation officials were compelled to acknowledge the evident inconsistencies in the British narrative of the Sergey or Yulia Skripal case, which we have been addressing over the years.

This entire situation is characterised by a politicised and non-transparent nature. It clearly indicates that the British authorities are not committed to a fair and impartial trial in the Skripal case. They are deliberately delaying the investigation, diverting it down a misleading path, and politicising the issue.
❗️ This underscores the apparent frame-up nature of the events and reveals that the true aim of the measures taken during Theresa May's premiership was to tarnish our country's international reputation and bilateral relations.

Попытка обвинить российских граждан и организации в распространении дезинформации и провоцировании неких беспорядков в третьих странах беспочвенны и нелепы. Подобная деятельность – не наш метод. Распространением фальшивок и разжиганием «Майданов» давно занимается Запад.
Кстати, мы буквально на прошлой неделе вспоминали о ярком примере провокаций с использованием подложных документов – «Письме Зиновьева».

❗️ By themselves, London’s so-called "sanctions" against Russia remain as illegitimate and worthless as ever.
The attempt to accuse Russian citizens and organisations of spreading disinformation and inciting some kind of unrest in third countries is groundless and absurd. Such actions are not our method. It is the West that has long been engaged in disseminating fabrications and instigating "Maidans".
Incidentally, just last week we recalled the glaring example of provocations based on forged documents – the Zinoviev Letter.
The reason for yet another anti-Russian move is clear: Britain, along with the West as a whole, finds it increasingly challenging to keep its citizens in the dark about the battlefield successes of Russia's Armed Forces, the constructive efforts of our authorities in newly-liberated territories, the criminal nature of the Kiev regime, and the inhumane methods of its militants – no to mention the price ordinary Britons pay for their government’s unthinking support of the "Ukraine project".
However, as the saying goes, the truth will out.

In light of escalating geopolitical tensions and the emergence of new external threats and risks, it is imperative for us to have modern strategic forces that are in a state of constant combat readiness.
We shall continue to enhance all their components, as we possess the necessary resources to do so. I must stress that we do not intend to be drawn into a new arms race; however, we will maintain our nuclear forces at a level of necessary sufficiency.

They discussed ways to further strengthen strategic partnerships within BRICS in the light of the outcomes of the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan on October 22-24 and chaired by Russia.
The Parties had a thorough exchange of views on the situation in and around Ukraine. The Russian Side laid out the fundamental approaches to the Ukrainian crisis resolution based on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative of June 14, highlighting the cornerstones of Moscow’s stance on the issue.
Those include:
• withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from all Russian regions,
• recognition of those regions as Russian territory,
• termination of Kiev’s attempts to apply for NATO membership,
• the lifting of Western sanctions against Russia,
• all-out guarantees of the rights of the Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine.
The meeting took place in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.

🌍 The final day of the Black History Month brings us to the present. Building on robust Soviet-era ties Russia continues to develop official relations and grassroots contacts with African nations and people of African origin.
Over recent years cooperation with African countries has advanced in leaps and bounds.
The format of the Russia-Africa Summits has been an unrivalled success, backed up by Economic and Humanitarian Forums in Sochi (2019) and St Petersburg (2023). In a week's time Russia will be hosting the First Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership.
🤝 The tenets of our relationship comprise respect for sovereignty, the right to self-determination and commitment to promoting the continent's independent development.
A pivotal element of Russia's policy – support for the continent's firm posture against neocolonialism, as shown by the recent voting on the UN General Assembly draft Resolution on eradicating colonialism in all its forms and manifestations. Russia unequivocally backed the initiative, while the UK, USA and some others chose to abstain.
Russia actively fosters the cultural and scientific dimension of its relationship with Africa. Nearly 30 thousand young women and men from the continent are studying in our country this year. Equally significant is Russia's contribution to the accelerating development of medical infrastructure in African countries.
🎶🎨⚽️ Meanwhile exchanges in arts, literature and sports combined with people-to-people contacts enable productive synergies and enhanced mutual understanding.
The Russian cultural scene continues to be enriched with Afro-Caribbean vibes and contributions of singers like the charismatic Serafim Makangila from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the fondly remembered Pierre Narcisse from Cameroon. A few years back Jean Gregoire Sagbo from Benin, a local councilor in Tver region, became the first elected politician of African origin in Russia's contemporary history. Over recent years cooperation with African countries has advanced in leaps and bounds.
The format of the Russia-Africa Summits has been an unrivalled success, backed up by Economic and Humanitarian Forums in Sochi (2019) and St Petersburg (2023). In a week's time Russia will be hosting the First Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership.

A pivotal element of Russia's policy – support for the continent's firm posture against neocolonialism, as shown by the recent voting on the UN General Assembly draft Resolution on eradicating colonialism in all its forms and manifestations. Russia unequivocally backed the initiative, while the UK, USA and some others chose to abstain.
Russia actively fosters the cultural and scientific dimension of its relationship with Africa. Nearly 30 thousand young women and men from the continent are studying in our country this year. Equally significant is Russia's contribution to the accelerating development of medical infrastructure in African countries.

The Russian cultural scene continues to be enriched with Afro-Caribbean vibes and contributions of singers like the charismatic Serafim Makangila from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the fondly remembered Pierre Narcisse from Cameroon. A few years back Jean Gregoire Sagbo from Benin, a local councilor in Tver region, became the first elected politician of African origin in Russia's contemporary history.
