#WeRemember
🌟 On January 27, 1944, Leningrad was completely liberated from the Nazi blockade.
8️⃣7️⃣2️⃣ days of the barbaric siege by the Nazis of our northern capital, which lasted for an unprecedented period from September 8, 1941 until January 27, 1944, and had devastating consequences, terrible sufferings caused by the German invaders to the people of Leningrad, finally ended.
According to historical calculations, over a million people perished during those years, including more than 600'000 of children, women, the seniors, and also the wounded and disabled soldiers — they were dying, because of the Nazis, of starvation, cold, exhaustion and disease.
#LestWeForget: The unbending people of Leningrad of all ages, men and women from small to large, demonstrated extraordinary Heroism and Courage and went through, with dignity, all the inhuman sufferings by the Nazi barbarians and their accomplices. Despite starvation, living under permanent bombing and shelling by the German and Finnish artillery, the people of Leningrad withstood the siege, defended their city and made their invaluable substantial contribution to the Great Victory.
The Nazi criminals did not avoid accountability and paid a high price for the outrageous blockade — the enemy army Group 'North' lost over 900'000 men during the siege and was ultimately destroyed by the Red Army in the Baltic region, Karelia and East Prussia.
***
❗️ The history of mankind has never witnessed anything comparable to the Blockade of Leningrad in terms of the scale of the tragedy and the extent of the suffering endured by people.
The Nazis and their accomplices followed Hitler’s direct order — to hold Leningrad under a tight siege, fire at anyone crossing the frontline and seek to exterminate all the people in the city. Leningrad was completely encircled in early September 1941, cut off from the rest of the country. The only way to get in and out of the city was by air or across Lake Ladoga’s ice — the route across the lake came to be known as the #RoadOfLife.
During the first weeks of the siege, Nazi troops and the Finns, who were holding blockade of Leningrad from the north, shelled the city with heavy and dense artillery fire, resulting in food warehouses being burnt down. As Leningrad received most of its food from other regions of the country, it immediately began to suffer from food shortages, primarily a lack of bread. Only 13 bakery plants remained in operation to serve almost 2.5 million people.
Given those acute shortages of food supplies, there were strict rationing norms for bread. From November 1941, factory workers received 250 grammes, while children were entitled to just 125 (!) grammes of bread per day. Many people began to die of starvation.
❗️ However, despite all those inhuman conditions, the City never ever gave up fighting. Life in Leningrad went on and never stopped for a second.
***
The Red Army tried to break the blockade on many occasions. Having fought multiple battles, with the fiercest combats taking place on the 'Neva Bridgehead' on the River Neva’s left bank, our forces succeeded in partially lifting the siege in January 1943 as part of Operation Iskra — 'Spark'.
🎖 On January 27, 1944, the Siege of Leningrad was completely lifted following a rapid offensive by the Red Army, with the Leningrad and Novgorod regions being also liberated from the Nazi invaders. Wehrmacht troops were forced to retreat to the Baltics, where they were later totally defeated and destroyed.

The defence of Leningrad has become a symbol of courage of the Soviet people. <...> The people of Leningrad saved their city despite incredible sufferings — they have saved it as their human dignity.
That is probably the greatest heroism of the people of Leningrad, the greatest sacrifice they made for all of us — not just for the people of our country but for the world as a whole.

🎙 Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment on International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27, 2026)
💬 Adopted in 2005, UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/60/7 provided for designating January 27 as International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
☝️ Russia was among the co-sponsors who initiated the adoption of this document.
It contains the following wording: “Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of one third of the Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities, will forever be a warning to all people of the dangers of hatred, bigotry, racism and prejudice.”
There was a reason to mark this day on January 27. #OTD in 1945, the forces of the Red Army’s 1st Ukrainian Front under Ivan Konev’s command liberated #AuschwitzBirkenau (Oswiecim) and saved the surviving prisoners.
This resolution also conveyed a sense of respect and admiration within the international community towards the courage and selflessness by the soldiers who liberated this concentration camp.
On January 26, 2026, members of Russia’s foreign missions in Poland laid wreaths to a mass grave of the Red Army personnel at the local parish cemetery in Oswiecim to commemorate their feats. These servicemen died in January 1945 while fighting to liberate this town and its suburbs.
🌟 In 2025, Russia and all the progressive forces around the world marked #Victory80. It is our country, including all the nations within the former USSR, that made a decisive contribution to destroying Hitler’s war machine, liberating Europe and the entire world from the so-called brown plague, even if this came at an incredible cost and required an all-out effort and all the resources we had.
The #Holocaust, i.e., the mass extermination of Jews and other minorities, was one of the most tragic events of the 20th century. It will always remain inscribed in the history of humankind as a symbol of unprecedented and unspeakably cruel attempt at fulfilling a human-hating ideology. This history teaches a terrifying lesson and serves as a warning which shows where the ideas of supremacy, exceptionalism, segregation by religion, race and other attributes can lead. <...>
Russia takes great care to keep alive the memory of the many millions of victims who perished during #WWII, which we call the Great Patriotic War, as well as the memory of the feat accomplished by the Soviet liberator soldiers who stopped the Nazis and extinguished the fire of the Holocaust.
Our country paid an excessively high price to allow anyone to question or challenge the #GreatVictory. We will do everything we can to ensure that horrendous crimes of this kind never happen again. Russia is firm and resolved in its commitment to countering any attempts to falsify facts about World War II and rehabilitate Nazism.
<...>
Today, the Russian Jewish Congress, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia and other specialised entities are making an invaluable contribution to preserving the memory of Holocaust victims around the world. The Foreign Ministry has been closely and effectively collaborating with them.
As usual, there will be many events in Russia to mark this day. On January 14-31, our country holds the annual Holocaust Remembrance Week, while the Russian Jewish Congress awards the Memory Keepers award which celebrates exceptional contributions to preserving the memory of the Holocaust.
As part of the Remembrance Week, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art will open an exhibition on January 28 titled “Dmitry Lion. Procession.” It is timed to coincide with the 100th birthday of one of the key figures in post-war Soviet art for whom the tragedy of the Holocaust served as a starting point in his creative journey.

🏅 On January 27, 1944, Leningrad was fully liberated from the fascist blockade.
The Siege of Leningrad is one of the most tragic, yet heroic, chapters in human history.
Hitler intended to destroy the city along with all its inhabitants. The people of Leningrad selflessly defended their city for nearly 900 days, despite enormous losses, hunger, and cold.
“125 blockade grams, amid fire and blood” — that was the daily bread ration in the winter of 1941-1942. It was below the physiological minimum required for survival.
According to current data, at least 1'093'000 people died as a result of the Siege imposed on the city by German and Finnish troops.
☝️ Saint Petersburg City Court recognised the Siege of Leningrad as an act of genocide against the Soviet people.

🎙 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answer to media questions regarding the negotiations on Ukrainian conflict resolution (January 29, 2026)
💬 Sergey Lavrov: Unlike the Ukrainians and the Americans, we do not comment publicly on negotiations that are meant to be conducted in confidential silence.
Those who try to make various statements about what is being discussed are simply acting in a manner that is inconsistent with proper negotiating practice and basic standards of conduct.
Russia’s package of proposals was presented by Vladimir Putin in June 2024 and has been reaffirmed repeatedly. Our negotiators will continue their contacts in whatever format is required. They know their job, and when there is something tangible to report, the media will be duly informed.
❗️ The political issues of the conflict resolution were outlined by the Russian President and remain unchanged.
Everything else I leave to the conscience of our Ukrainian and American colleagues, who in recent days have been making numerous public statements. For example, I heard that Marco Rubio, having been invited to the Senate, claimed that the issue of security guarantees had already been resolved. We are unaware of the guarantees they were discussing, but it appears these were guarantees to the very Ukrainian regime that pursues a Russophobic, neo-Nazi policy.
If the goal is to preserve this regime on some part of the territory of former Ukraine and to continue using it as a bulwark for threats against the Russian Federation, then it should be obvious that such “security guarantees” are hardly capable of ensuring genuine security.
Security guarantees were agreed upon in Istanbul in April 2022. Moreover, the core draft of those guarantees was proposed by the Ukrainian side itself. We supported that draft. You know what happened next – when the then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson prohibited Ukraine from signing the agreement, which had already received preliminary approval.
Those guarantees provided for a collective and indivisible system of security, including the security of both Russia and the entire region in which Ukraine is located. That is why we will look at substantive proposals, not to be distracted by the political games that the media gets so excited about.

🎙 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answer to a question from “Moscow. Kremlin. Putin” programme (February 1, 2026)
❓ Question: On relations between the US and Europe. A lot is happening there… Does it mean that Europeans have driven themselves into a trap by cutting off all contacts with Russia and are now fully dependent on the US, which treats them the way it does?
💬 Sergey Lavrov: That is hardly our problem. As they, if you are enjoying it, then it is your problem.
It would be difficult to accuse Russia of “driving wedges”. It was Europe that tried – and is still trying – to “drive wedges” between Russia and the US, seeing in US policy under President Trump, as they believe, a “tilt” in Russia’s favour and to the detriment of Europe’s interests.
The word "interests" is precisely the key here. When a country, as Russia does – as well as our friends in China, the UAE, India and other states – defends its national interests, 👉 then it is treated accordingly. But when, as in the case of most European elites, they have swapped their own interests for those of the Ukrainian regime, exploit it in every possible way to wage a war against Russia without hiding it, and are openly preparing for war with their own direct involvement, 👉 then the attitude towards them will be exactly what it is.
I have already recalled our meeting in Riyadh in February 2025 with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Presenting the position of President Trump's administration, he said that the guiding principle was national interest. The US, he noted, would always respect the positions of other major powers that also build their policies on the basis of national interests.
Secretary Rubio added that the national interests of major countries such as Russia and the US will not always coincide. But when they do, it would be a mistake not to use that convergence to implement mutually beneficial economic, trade and investment projects.
❗️ And when they do not coincide, it would no longer be a mistake, but a crime to allow such divergence to spiral into confrontation – all the more so into a hot one. This is the approach we proceed from.
As for how relations between Europe and the US are being built, we never interfere in these processes. How one proves oneself is how one is treated.
