THE GEOGLYPHS OF PERU

Why might ancient peoples construct art that is only recognizable from the air? This is the question posed by southern Peru's Nazca Lines. Known as geoglyphs, the lines are actually drawings etched into the surface of the arid Pampa Colorada. The lines depict plants, animals, humans, and geometrical shapes, with examples including a spider, a monkey, and even a figure some say is an astronaut.

The Nazca Lines were constructed over 2,000 years ago by the Nazca culture. They were built by removing dark surface stones to expose the light sand beneath. Because of the region's dry climate, the lines have remained intact for centuries, and the size of the figures, extending to many hundreds of feet, made them visible to pilots flying over the area in the 1920s.

Theories about the lines' purpose abound: that they're Inca roads, irrigation ditches, a massive astronomical calendar, and event landing strips for alien aircraft. Today though, most archaeologists agree that the Nazca Lines were used for ceremonial purposes, likely revolving around pleas for water. Whatever their purpose, the Nazca Lines are an impressive ancient achievement and were therefore recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.
