👨‍🏫 A month ago, my father — a leading expert in Ancient Roman literature — turned 80. I asked what advice I should pass to the next generation. He gave me 3:

➕ One year ago, the French police detained me for 4 days because some people I’d never heard of used Telegram to coordinate crimes. Arresting a CEO of a major platform over the actions of its users was not only unprecedented — it was legally and logically absurd.

A year later, the ‘criminal investigation’ against me is still struggling to find anything that I or Telegram did wrong. Our moderation practices align with industry standards, and Telegram has always responded to every legally binding request from France.

Ironically, I was arrested due to the French police’s own mistake: before August 2024, they ignored French and EU laws and hadn’t sent any of their queries to Telegram via the required legal process. They could have learned the correct procedure simply by googling it or asking.

One year after this strange arrest, I still have to return to France every 14 days, with no appeal date in sight. Sadly, the only outcome of my arrest so far has been massive damage to France’s image as a free country. 🛠

Un año después, la ‘investigación criminal’ contra mí sigue sin encontrar nada que yo o Telegram hayamos hecho mal. Nuestras prácticas de moderación están alineadas con los estándares de la industria, y Telegram siempre ha respondido a todas las solicitudes legalmente vinculantes de Francia.

Irónicamente, fui arrestado debido a un error de la propia policía francesa: antes de agosto de 2024, ignoraron las leyes francesas y de la UE y no enviaron ninguna de sus consultas a Telegram mediante el proceso legal requerido. Podrían haber aprendido el procedimiento correcto simplemente buscándolo en Google o preguntando.

Un año después de este extraño arresto, todavía tengo que regresar a Francia cada 14 días, sin fecha de apelación a la vista. Lamentablemente, el único resultado de mi arresto hasta ahora ha sido un daño masivo a la imagen de Francia como un país libre. 🛠

🥇 Впервые команда СПбГУ заняла первое место в ICPC в 2000 и 2001 годах, когда в ней участвовал мой брат. С тех пор петербургские студенты ещё 10 раз становились абсолютными победителями, сделав этот город мировым лидером по количеству чемпионских титулов.

😼 Горжусь достижениями университета и города — и надеюсь лично поздравить чемпионов в Дубае. Буду рад, если Telegram сможет содействовать в реализации их будущих проектов и идей. 💫

🥇 Por primera vez, el equipo de la Universidad Estatal de San Petersburgo ganó el primer lugar en el ICPC en los años 2000 y 2001, cuando participó mi hermano. Desde entonces, los estudiantes de San Petersburgo han sido campeones absolutos 10 veces más, haciendo de esta ciudad líder mundial en cantidad de títulos de campeones.
