Forwarded from Russia in Canada
Embassy's Comment on 🇨🇦 GAC's post.

Canada strongly condemns Russia’s latest drone attack on the #Chernobyl radiation shelter. Targeting nuclear infrastructure could have devastating consequences for the health and safety of Ukrainians and all Europeans. We call on Russia to cease such reckless action.

We regret that the Canadian Side continues to fall for staged provocations by the Kiev regime.
⚡️ Excerpt from the Russia's Foreign Ministry's 2024 Report 'On Violations of the Rights of Russian Citizens and Fellow Citizens in Foreign Countries'

❗️ Rights violations in Spain

Manifestations of Russophobia in Spain are a matter of concern.

Since the beginning of the special military operation by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine and protect the peaceful population of Donbass, the Spanish government's discourse has changed swiftly, affecting Russian citizens living in the country, especially in the spring-summer of 2022.

Russophobic propaganda in the media, the mass influx of Ukrainians (in 2022-2024, the Spanish authorities granted the EU temporary protection status to about 210,000 Ukrainians), as well as the activities of a number of Ukrainian nationalist organizations played a major role in this regard.

⚠️ The unconcealed Russophobic rhetoric expressed by several Spanish officials also made a negative contribution (for example, Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida in a conversation with pranksters in June 2022 agreed with the need to "punish the Russian bastards").

In 2022, the negative attitudes towards our compatriots in everyday life increased, as did the spread of Russophobic statements on social media.

Russian-language chats in Spain often included messages about fighting "Russian World promoters," which, in violation of local law, called to collect information about Russians and their personal data on a specially created website.

There have also been mass blockings of bank accounts and bank cards belonging to Russian citizens without explanation in the first half of 2022, as well as isolated cases of bullying of Russian-speaking children and adolescents in Spanish educational institutions and psychological harassment of Russians living in Spain.

Among other things, cases of such discriminatory treatment of children were reported to the Russian Embassy by our compatriots. The Legal Assistance Centre for Legal, Judicial and Social Assistance to Russians in Spain, established on the basis of a compatriot association, has received about 700 requests since March 2022 (160 requests in 2024).

<...>

About 450 assets allegedly belonging to Russian individuals or entities on the illegitimate EU sanctions list with a total value of over EUR 1 billion remain frozen in Spain.

The presence in Spain of a large number of Ukrainians remains a negative factor since Russians and Russian-speaking citizens periodically face manifestations of aggression and harassment, mainly from nationalist Ukrainians.

Serious concern is caused by the total cleansing of the Spanish media space of Russian media and the imposition of strict anti-Russian censorship. As a result, there is virtually no alternative information about Russia's policies, which is especially serious in the context of propaganda pressure from the collective West. An information blockade has been imposed on the Russian Embassy by the main Spanish media.

In addition, the local authorities, having ignored numerous appeals from the Russian Embassy, continue to condone an aggressive anti-Russian picket held by Ukrainians on a daily basis in front of the diplomatic mission, whose participants use criminal Bandera symbols, insults and threats of violence on ethnic grounds.

🎖 It is worth noting, despite the current foreign policy, that the associations of compatriots, with the support of friendly Spanish organizations, managed to successfully hold a number of events in May 2024, dedicated to the celebration of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War and aimed at preserving historical truth and memory, as well as consolidating our diaspora.

📺 Watch Minister-Counsellor Alexander Gusarov's interview with the Southern African Times

Key talking points:

Russia is returning to Africa, rekindling lost connections and tapping new opportunities. <...> We are reopening or establishing new embassies across the region. We have established a new department within the Russian MFA to deal with the partnership with Africa. This shows the level of our political and economic investment into the region.

With its growing population, treasure trove of natural resources and industrial development, Africa really is the continent of the future. We are doing our utmost to engage in demand-driven cooperation with African countries, both bilaterally and multilaterally.

Russia has not just aligned itself with decolonization efforts, but we have actually spearheaded and championed these efforts in many different ways. Our country was actively driving the decolonization process, contributing to the self-determination of African nations.

When we meet with our African colleagues, we try to talk less and listen more. We have the Russia-Africa Summit. Last year, we held the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum meeting at ministerial level. These are all formats for discussing manifold avenues for cooperation, be it healthcare, education, telecommunications or space research.

We have ramped up scholarship grants for African students. We are fine-tuning the system of vocational tuition and guidance, opening up new linguistics courses within Russian universities, and also faculties of Russian universities in Africa. At the time of the first Russia-Africa Summit back in 2019, there were about 17,000 African students studying in Russia. Last year, it was 35,000.

We are coordinating quite closely with African colleagues <...> at the UN on a plethora of issues. Russia's position is more often than not closer to the stance adopted by the countries of the Global South, including Africa. As for Africa's representation within multilateral bodies, we are certainly supportive of these endeavors, including in the UN Security Council.

Russia is able to provide quite substantive technological advances, for example in the nuclear sphere, such as small modular reactors. It would certainly be useful to quenching African energy needs.

⚡️ On Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

🇷🇺🇺🇸📞 On February 15, at the initiative of the American Side, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Building on the February 12 telephone conversation between the Presidents of Russia and the United States, the two Foreign Ministers agreed to maintain an open channel of communication to address longstanding issues in Russian-American relations. Their goal is to remove unilateral barriers inherited from the previous US administration that have hindered mutually beneficial trade, economic and investment cooperation.

Both Sides expressed a shared commitment to engaging on key international issues, including the Ukraine settlement, developments in Palestine and the broader Middle East, as well as other regional matters.

The conversation also covered ways to swiftly reverse the restrictions on Russian diplomatic missions in the United States, which were introduced by the Obama administration in 2016 and led to reciprocal measures. It was agreed that expert-level meetings will be organised in the near future to coordinate specific steps towards removing these obstacles to the functioning of diplomatic missions in Russia and the United States.

❗️ Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio reaffirmed their readiness to restore a respectful and constructive interstate dialogue in line with the approach set by the Presidents. They agreed to maintain regular contact, including discussions on preparations for a potential high-level Russian-American summit.
⚡️On February 14, in the village of Cherkasskaya Konopelka, Kursk region 🇷🇺 the Channel One film crew was subjected to a targeted attack by militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

As a result, cameraman Yuriy Sholmov was seriously injured.

📢We draw the attention of #UNESCO Secretariat to this crime of the Kiev regime against Russian journalists and call on Director-General A.Azoulay in accordance with relevant decisions of the General Conference and the Executive Council, to condemn this attack that resulted in physical violence against the journalist Yuriy Sholmov.
