🇷🇺 Interview of Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia Sergei Tolchenov to SEA Today (11/12/2024)
Key points:
• BRICS is a group of countries that pursue independent policies and hold important positions in the global economy and politics. We believe that Indonesia will definitely join this group in the future.
• Indonesia is a key partner for Russia. Next year, on February 3, we will celebrate 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries. I can confidently state that throughout these years, we have maintained good and friendly bilateral relations.
• During my first posting here, I always felt the warm reception of the Indonesian people. I hope this friendliness will continue to strengthen our bilateral ties.
• Russia is a vast and diverse country, and I hope many Indonesians will have the opportunity to see it with their own eyes. With the launch of direct flights between Moscow and Denpasar this September, travel will become much faster, fostering increased tourist exchanges.

🎙 President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin attended a meeting of the 22nd Congress of the United Russia political party (December 14, 2024)
💬 All parliamentary parties in Russia, all of them, are united in their support for everything that is aimed at protecting the people in Donbass and Novorossiya and ensuring firm guarantees for the security of the Motherland for decades to come. <...>
Such mutual support, genuine brotherhood in the face of adversity, and unity in the name of our homeland have emerged historically. This is the character of our people. The seemingly very simple word ‘we’ now gets a special, unifying meaning.
“We do not abandon our people” — this principle, a noble call is clear and close to each of us. Because unity, perception of Russia as our home, as a huge family of families, is our great value. It is our tremendous enduring strength, our confidence in today and tomorrow.
🤝 I want to say thank you to all those who contribute to the protection of Russia’s national interests both on the frontlines and on the homefront. <...>
The time of challenges also opens up new opportunities and possibilities for us, which we will pursue together. I am confident that we will be able to do it not only in the future, but also right now, as we achieve solid, evident results. Russia is progressing, the economy is growing, which is done against the backdrop of unparalleled — in the full and direct meaning of the world — sanctions, gross interference and pressure from the ruling elites of some countries.
☝️ However, no blackmailing or attempts to stand in our way will yield any result. Russia has confidence in itself, it feels it is right and feels its power. Therefore, all the short- and long-term tasks we have set will definitely be completed. <...>
The very name of the party (United Russia) shows the essence of our course, the image of the country that we are building, want to preserve and pass on to our descendants, the awareness that we are a unique, distinctive civilisation, a multinational and multi-faith nation which, for all its internal diversity, has been and will be united. <...>
Our opponents have been trying to undermine this unity throughout all history, and now they are again following a scenario that has been tested out on others, trying to divide people, play the national or religious card.
❗️We will firmly suppress such provocations, we will respond to any threats and challenges, and we are ready to fight back, as they say, along the entire front. And it is not only along the line of combat contact. The truly global, decisive confrontation affects all aspects of our lives: culture, education, worldview, the economy and the technological sphere.

🎙 Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Remembrance Day of Journalists Killed in the Line of Duty
💬 On December 15, Russia marks the Remembrance Day of Journalists Killed in the Line of Duty, established in 1991 at the initiative of the Union of Journalists of Russia following the deaths of the USSR State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company correspondent Viktor Nogin and cameraman Gennady Kurinny during the civil war in Yugoslavia.
On this day, we remember those who lost their lives while carrying out their editorial assignments in hot spots, those who died for their beliefs and loyalty to the profession, including in terrorist attacks, and risked their lives to fulfill their journalistic duty until the last moment, defending the truth and freedom of speech.
◾️ In 2024, militants of the criminal Kiev regime killed Semyon Yeryomin, Valery Kozhin, Nikita Tsitsagi, and Yulia Kuznetsova. We will remember them as the victims of Ukrainian neo-Nazis and their henchmen. Anton Voloshin, Igor Kornelyuk, Anatoly Klyan, Andrey Stenin, Darya Dugina, Oleg Klokov, Maxim Fomin (Vladlen Tatarsky), Rostislav Zhuravlev, and Boris Maksudov will forever remain in our hearts.
❗️ The targeted hunt for Russian journalists and war correspondents carried out by Ukrainian thugs is a direct consequence of the years-long policy pursued by the Kiev clique’s Western curators who enabled and even encouraged terrorist methods, as well as by the multilateral structures they control, whose direct responsibility is to ensure the safety of journalists without any distinctions.
The outrageous situation around UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay’s Report on the Safety of Journalists and the Danger of Impunity for 2022-2023, which deliberately ignored the facts of numerous killings of Russian journalists and war correspondents by the criminal Kiev regime, is yet another obvious manifestation of hypocrisy and double standards.
At the special session of the Intergovernmental Council of UNESCO’s International Programme for Development and Communication (IPDC) that took place in Paris on December 13, the Russian delegation, supported by a number of countries representing the Global South, succeeded in rejecting the approval of the report by UNESCO Director-General that contained false information. In their desperate attempts to defend their protégé Audrey Azoulay, the countries of the collective West only exposed their hypocritical approaches to the issue of ensuring the safety of journalists, once again demonstrating to the general public that the “rules-based world order” essentially means rights and freedoms for the privileged few, while showing disdain and indifference towards the rest.
☝️ We will always oppose this hypocritical approach and will continue to demand that the relevant international structures, including UNESCO and its Director-General, fulfill their responsibilities conscientiously and impartially.
We feel the unconditional support for our efforts from members of the professional community, which have voiced their indignation at the politically biased stance of the organisation’s leadership in their numerous appeals to its Director-General. These efforts are crucial not only to honour the memory of those who dedicated themselves to their profession and sacrificed their lives for it, but also to prevent such atrocities in the future
🕯 We mourn together with the families and friends of the killed journalists, cameramen, photojournalists, and war correspondents.
We believe that those responsible for their deaths will inevitably face the punishment they deserve.

“Divide and rule”: two dimensions of a destructive policy
✍️ The term “divide and rule” became a household word in Britain in the 17th century, but the policy itself was widely used in the Roman Empire and borrowed by the European colonial empires. It was crucial for providing subsistence to nearly all major colonial systems <...>.
No parent state wanted dependent territories to prosper. It was much simpler to pit nations against each other and draw artificial borders on the political map that divided ethnic groups regardless of their interests. <...>
There were two dimensions, a horizontal and a vertical one, within this divide et impera – divide and rule — policy. Colonial powers followed a horizontal approach for splitting the local population into separate communities, usually on the grounds of religion, race or language. The vertical divide resulted from an effort by foreign rulers to segregate society into classes by separating the elite from the masses. <...>
👉 A targeted push to fuel religious and ethnic tension and confrontation served as one of the key tools for delivering on the divide element. <...>
London must be credited for inciting and reinforcing the Hindu-Muslim antagonism. British colonisers used to bring cheap agricultural labour to Burma from Bengal, a predominantly Muslim region. <...> Mutual distrust and fierce competition for the already limited resources, i.e., the right to own land, between native Burmans and those who descended from labour migrants led to the bloody events of 1942-1943.<...>.
👉 Western civilisations have also excelled in spreading myths about some ethnic group being superior to others. The French colonial administration in Algeria benefited from the perceived inequality between Arabs and Kabyles and their strife. In fact, Paris concocted a stereotype that the Kabyle people were somehow more apt for being assimilated within the French civilisation compared to Arabs.
