🇷🇺🇯🇴 On August 21, 1963, our country established diplomatic relations with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
This happened 6️⃣1️⃣ years ago, and this date marked the starting point for the two countries’ efforts to expand and advance their multifaceted ties based on mutual respect.
During the Soviet era, the USSR and Jordan forged constructive and steady cooperation, with Moscow and Amman holding consultations on major regional matters while seeking to reinforce their relations in trade, economics, military-technical affairs, energy, culture, and other domains.
🤝 Today, our two countries are building on these traditions of friendly relations and striving to inject even more momentum across a wide range of sectors. Russia and Jordan are both committed to deepening their political dialogue. Our two countries cooperate within the #UN and other international organisations and stand for resolving crises in the Middle East by peaceful means.
Russia and Jordan have been maintaining and developing regular contacts at the highest and high levels on key bilateral and international matters, which includes telephone conversations between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Jordan Ayman Safadi.
🎉 We would like to offer our colleagues and friends in Jordan our greetings on this shared anniversary, and express our certainty that Russia and Jordan will continue to strengthen and expand their relations.

✍️ Article by Ambassador of Russia to Indonesia H.E. Mr Sergei Tolchenov on resisting neocolonial practices published in The Jakarta Post (August 21, 2024)
Key points:
• It is notorious that violent exploitation of other civilizations in the form of colonialism and that slavery played a fundamental role in the enrichment of the West and maintaining its dominance.
• Today, the West, headed by the United States, while implementing neocolonial practices seeks to hamper the natural development of global processes, keep an unbalanced model of the global economy, eliminate competitors in the military-political and economic fields as well as retain its elusive dominance.
• According to some calculations, the West drained over US $62 trillion worth of raw materials from Global South countries between 1960 and 2018.
• Another illustrative example is the serious debate in the Netherlands on whether to withdraw the official apologies regarding the war crimes committed by the Dutch against the Indonesians during the Independence ar in 1945-1949.
• Without any doubt, coordination of the approaches of the world majority countries is necessary to establish a completely new system of international relations based on the principles of respect and well-wishing non-interference.

🎙 Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s answer to a question from the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency about Defence Minister of Latvia Andris Sprūds’ statement concerning Latvian supplies of drones to Ukraine
❓Question: In late July, Latvian authorities announced that they had supplied 500 drones to the Kiev regime. Defence Minister of Latvia Andris Sprūds said recently that Latvia had prepared an additional 500 drones for delivery to Ukraine.
Does Russia view these decisions by Latvia as escalating tensions along the Russian borders, and what retaliatory measures might be taken in response?
💬 Maria Zakharova: We regard the remarks by Latvian Defence Minister Andris Sprūds as further evidence of Latvia’s growing involvement in the armed conflict in Ukraine. Riga is deliberately exacerbating the situation and provoking an expansion in the geography of the hostilities. They openly express satisfaction that Latvian weapons are used by the Zelensky regime to kill civilians and fire at Russian cities. Regrettably, this is to be expected given the current situation in Latvia. The local political establishment is predominantly made up of ideological heirs of the Waffen-SS, who hate Russia at the genetic level and seek to settle historical scores.
Riga’s hostile actions can only prolong the agony of the Kiev regime and will not impact the outcome of the special military operation.
Regarding our retaliatory measures, Latvia is already feeling their significant impact on its economy. In addition, individuals implicated in crimes against Russia will certainly face well-deserved punishment, as Russia is actively conducting relevant investigative actions.

🇷🇺 August 22 is the State Flag Day in Russia, established on August 20, 1994, in accordance with Presidential Executive Order "On the State Flag Day of the Russian Federation".
#OTD, we pay tribute to Russia’s official state symbol which, alongside its emblem and the national anthem, stands as a symbol of and the testimony to the country’s sovereignty and independence, while asserting the generational continuity for our multicultural and multi-ethnic nation.
The Russian tricoloured flag is over three hundred years old. Tsar Peter I is considered to be its creator: he ordered “commercial vessels of all kinds” to sail under the white-blue-red flag. However, it was only in 1896 that this flag obtained its official status, not long before Emperor Nicholas II’s coronation.
⚪️🔵🔴 While there is no official interpretation of the national flag colours, it is widely accepted that white symbolizes purity, independence and peace, blue embodies faith, loyalty and justice, while red stands for courage, might and valour.
☝️ Today, the tricoloured flag has become an integral part of our lives as a symbol of the Russian state, national unity and our people's devotion to the Fatherland, as well as the commitment to assert and promote the national interests.

✍️ The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin sent a greeting message to the organisers and participants of the Great African Expedition.
✉️ Relations between Russia and African countries are on the rise which was starkly highlighted following the second Russia-Africa Summit held in St Petersburg last year.
Fisheries have traditionally been an important part of bilateral economic cooperation. The Great African Expedition made possible by the Federal Agency for Fisheries will undoubtedly help ramp up joint efforts in this area.
Assessing the size of aquatic biological resources in the exclusive economic zones of African countries is what this major and truly unparalleled research project all about. The populations of commercial species of marine fauna occurring in a significant portion of these vast water areas that are part of the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean have not been studied for a long time now.
We operate on the premise that the research conducted by Russian specialists will boost the effectiveness of fishing carried out by our African partners, which, in turn, will improve Africa’s food security.

🎙 Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s answer to questions from Rossiya Segodnya on the Latvian authorities’ efforts to create obstacles for Russian nationals seeking to renew their residence permits
❓ Question: According to recent reports, the Latvian authorities have created obstacles for Russian citizens seeking to renew their permanent resident cards. Now, they need to confirm their proficiency in the Latvian language and fill out a questionnaire about their attitude towards the special military operation and Crimea. What does the Foreign Ministry think about these decisions by Latvia?
💬 Maria Zakharova: We will continue to counter the legal outrage we are witnessing in Latvia by retaliating with great resolve and firmness, which includes asymmetrical measures. It is an established fact that Russia’s steps on the economic front in this regard have already had a significant impact on the budget revenue of this Baltic state.
❓ Question: How do these measures align with the imperative of respecting human rights?
💬 Maria Zakharova: These requirements, as outlined in Latvia’s migration laws, are openly Russophobic. They constitute a grave violation of fundamental international norms, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and more.
We have addressed this issue multiple times, including at the specialised international venues. However, the Latvian leadership has effectively disregarded the opinions voiced by Russia and most other members of the international community, with curators and patrons from Brussels and Washington covering up their actions.
The Russian Embassy in Latvia continues to offer our compatriots there all the consular and legal support they need. At the same time, we will continue our efforts to collect evidence based on written testimonies by our compatriots who have faced arbitrary treatment by the Latvian authorities. This evidence will be used to prepare individual and class action lawsuits that will be submitted to local and international courts.
☝️ Riga must understand that it will be held accountable for its barbaric actions towards the Russian-speaking population.

🇷🇺🇺🇳 Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN:
🎙 Statement by Chargé d’Affaires of the Russian Federation Dmitry Polyanskiy at UN Security Council Open Debate on Conflict Prevention (August 21, 2024)
💬 We have been consistent in our belief that effective conflict prevention must be based on the need to take into account national priorities and the uniqueness of each specific case. <...> An important factor for effective conflict prevention is precisely the national responsibility of the state, which means that the state itself is responsible for the well-being and security of its citizens. Indeed, who but the national authorities can be better aware of the needs of the society and the risks this society faces.
Accordingly, the Government of each sovereign state should decide independently whether certain measures or strategies are really needed for preventing conflicts in the country, stopping violence, tackling negative consequences of crises, or addressing any other challenges relevant to any given context.
<...>
☝️ Despite the fact that all countries are equal in the face of the threat of conflict or violence, some states initially put themselves above others, they want to lecture others, but in no way are they ready to listen to criticism about them. This is also one of the problems of today's prevention.
As long as some actors try to divide the world into "teachers and students," the breeding ground for new conflicts will only expand. And if we add to this the historical injustice that has not yet been redressed when it comes to developing countries, primarily African states, it becomes clear that the countries of the Global South face much more difficulty both in preventing conflicts and crises and addressing the consequences entailed.
Despite the fact that the era of colonialism is considered to be consigned to history, in our world today there are still a huge number of ways of preserving and deepening the dependence of those states who suffered from the colonial yoke.
In order to preserve their fading hegemony, the former colonial powers and their allies by hook or by crook secure their dominance in the world, trying (vainly) to impede the creation of a just, multipolar world order. What is also in play here is entrenching the commodity-based nature of developing countries' economies, imposing harsh and essentially fettering IMF programs, and triggering brain drain.
❗️All of this perpetuates economic underdevelopment, poverty and political instability in developing countries, which creates an ideal fertile ground for conflicts.
Instead of facilitating the development on the scale and in the form the Global South needs, those self-proclaimed “lords of the world” prefer to supply larger quantities of weapons to hot spots taking advantage of people's suffering, steal resources and appropriate other people's assets. And those who oppose such injustice are doomed to unilateral sanctions and unlawful restrictive measures.
What kind of prevention can we talk about in such conditions❓
And this is despite the fact that the nascent conflicts are often so obvious that it is much harder not to notice a looming problematic situation than to sound the alarm in this regard.
👉 However, many Members of the Security Council prefer to demonstrate selective deafness and blindness, and then blame anyone for the conflict except for themselves.

⚡️Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Russian Mission to the EU Kirill Logvinov answers a question by TASS News Agency, 22 August 2024
❓Question: Could you please comment on the statement by the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell that the Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk region is a severe blow to Russian President’s narrative and that strikes on Russian territory should help advance certain "peace efforts”?
💬The European bureaucracy seems to have been let loose from the American chain. Or it has run wild by itself, linking the further fate of the European project to the outcome of the Russian Special Military Operation.
❗️This statement by Josep Borrell shows that the European Union has definitively decided to finish off Ukraine, openly pushing Ukrainians to commit suicide for the sake of achieving the West's geopolitical goal of causing irreparable damage to Russia and, as a consequence, subordinating it to globalist interests.
In fact, the head of EU diplomacy has updated the basic principles of Brussels' long-term course towards Russia. There can hardly be any doubt now that the European Union, which has deployed absolutely all the resources at its disposal, is moving from global standoff with our country to a direct military and political confrontation.
❌Mr. Borrell’s words confirm yet again that the "division of labor" between NATO and the EU has become obsolete, with the European Union rapidly transforming into a militaristic bloc. In practice, this shift entails not only an increase in arms production but also the explicit designation of specific targets for their use.

🎙 Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment on Russia’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities
💬 On August 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation officially notified the Council of Europe of the loss of effect of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities (#FCNM) on Russia’s relations with other parties to the Convention. In fact, it was a technical confirmation of the change, since the Law on Denunciation of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities was signed by President of Russia Vladimir Putin on October 19, 2023. <...>
Regrettably, the well-intentioned goals of the convention, as initially conceived by its creators, have been distorted to align with the political interests of a group of Western countries.
☝️ After Russia started the special military operation, the Council of Europe initiated an extensive campaign to oust our country from the convention-related mechanisms of the Council of Europe. Among other things, it made it impossible for Russian experts to take part in the decision-making on issues that are relevant to us. <...>
That resolution significantly curtailed the authority of the Russian expert within the Advisory Committee, citing Russia no longer being a member of the Council of Europe. The limitations imposed by the Committee of Ministers on our participation in the convention’s monitoring mechanism are in conflict with principles of international law, including pacta sunt servanda (“agreements must be honoured”) and the sovereign equality of states, let alone the fact that these restrictions also violate Russia’s rights derived from the convention to contribute to the fulfilment of its essential functions.
In turn, the Advisory Committee of the Council of Europe’s Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities has, during the most recent monitoring cycle, released findings and conclusions regarding our country that were clearly biased and based on information from biased sources. Moreover, the official data provided by Russia was often misinterpreted to portray Russian authorities in a negative light and intentionally framed as part of a deliberate state policy to infringe on the rights of ethnic minorities.
⛔️ This was done in total disregard for our readiness to openly and substantively discuss specific cases of such violations, if any.
In this context, the most appropriate course of action for our country was to denounce the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities of the Council of Europe. Given that the principles enshrined in this convention have been fully integrated into Russian legislation, ending our participation in this treaty will not undermine protections for the rights of national minorities across the Russian Federation. Russian laws and legal practices ensure equal rights for national minorities to participate in political, economic, and cultural aspects of society. <...>
It is worth noting that the majority of Council of Europe member states have taken steps that undermined the potential of the Framework Convention to provide international legal protection against gross violations of the rights of the Russian-speaking people in the Baltic countries and Ukraine. Despite these countries being signatories, they systematically and cynically violate the provisions of this treaty, as well as other international commitments in this sphere. We will continue to address these violations.
❗️ Russia’s withdrawal from the convention will not hinder our ongoing systematic efforts on relevant international human rights platforms to protect Russian speakers’ rights.
In this regard, I would like to urge the states that remain parties to this Convention and other Council of Europe treaties to contemplate the potential ramifications when such a disregard for international law is directed against them.

🗓 The Battle of Kursk, one of the greatest military engagements in human history, ended on August 23, 1943 – 81 years ago. In total, the battle involved over 4 million people, over 69,000 guns and mortars, more than 13,000 tanks and self-propelled guns, and nearly 12,000 aircraft.
⚔️ The 50-day Battle of Kursk included a defensive operation (July 5-23) and a number of offensive operations (July 12-August 23) in the area of the Kursk Salient (Kursk Bulge) that formed in the centre of the Soviet-German front in the spring of 1943. The battle was aimed at breaking up a major German offensive and routing the enemy’s strategic grouping.
The battle began with a German offensive, but after a week of stubborn defence, the Red Army managed to stop the enemy push. On July 12, a major tank battle involving a total of 1,200 Soviet and German tanks and assault guns took place near the village of Prokhorovka in the Belgorod Region. The German tank force lost nearly 10,000 men and over 360 tanks, with the enemy definitively cut off from the city of Kursk. On the same day, the Soviet forces launched a counter-offensive, liberating the cities of Oryol and Belgorod. The Battle of the Kursk Bulge culminated in the liberation of Kharkov on August 23, after which the Red Army launched the fighting to liberate Ukraine.
🎖 The Soviet participants in the Battle of Kursk displayed courage, tenacity, and mass heroism: over 100,000 people were awarded orders and medals; 231 people were honoured with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union; 132 formations and units were added to the Guards category; and 26 units received the designations of Oryol, Belgorod, Kharkov and Karachev in honour of the cities they had liberated. The Kursk Bulge memorial to the heroic victory of the Soviet soldiers was erected in Kursk.
❗️Today, Western military equipment is once again being destroyed on Kursk soil, while its residents show unwavering resolve in the face of Nazi aggression, this time from Ukrainian militants backed by NATO countries.
