🇷🇺🇸🇱 On May 7, Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Sierra Leone Timothy Musa Kabba, who was in Moscow on a working visit.

The Ministers exchanged views on a number of current issues related to the further development of traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Sierra Leone, including the strengthening of political dialogue and trade, economic, cultural and other forms of cooperation.

☝️ They specifically outlined some additional political steps needed to stimulate bilateral business cooperation, in particular the implementation of promising joint projects in mining, geology and power generation.

Their in-depth discussion on the key international and African issues focused on the UN Security Council reform and the situation in Ukraine and around it, as well as on developments in the Middle East, the Sahel-Sahara Region and West Africa. They reaffirmed the similarity of their countries’ positions of principle on the majority of issues under discussion and emphasised the priority of political and diplomatic methods of defusing crises in Africa, with the leading role to be played by the Africans themselves with support from the international community. In this context, they agreed to continue to coordinate their actions at the UN and on other international platforms.

Sergey Lavrov and Timothy Musa Kabba devoted considerable attention to a broad range of issues related to the sustainable development of multifaceted Russia-Africa cooperation with due regard for the outcome of the second Russia-Africa Summit, held in St Petersburg in July 2023, and preparations for a ministerial conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum scheduled to be held in Sochi in November 2024.

🇷🇺🇺🇸 Ambassador Anatoly Antonov’s answer to a media question

: Dear Ambassador Antonov, how would you comment on a new U.S. military aid package to Ukraine announced today by the Administration?

💬 Anatoly Antonov: Another shipment of arms to the Zelensky regime is a reaction to the successes of the Russian Armed Forces at the front. Our soldiers and officers heroically continue to liberate Russian soil. This is in fact acknowledged here in America.

☝️However, the vast majority of local politicians are silent about how neo-Nazis use the deadly weapons they receive from the United States. The Administration is not interested in the fact that American arms are destroying civilian objects on Russian territory.

❗️The White House is hypocritically shrugging off responsibility for these attacks. Meanwhile, rockets are falling on residential buildings and schools in Donbass, Crimea, the Belgorod region. Children and women are dying. In Kiev, they don’t care about promises made to their sponsors not to use Western munitions against targets in the Russian Federation.

👉 The timing of providing the “package” to the criminals on Bankova Street is cynical. The announcement came during the celebration of the 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. However, any attempts by Washington and its like-minded satellites to distort history and make humanity forget the lessons of the past will fail.

Supplies of weapons to the bankrupt regime will not affect the results of the Special Military Operation. Victory will be ours!

🗓 On May 11, 1939, Soviet Union and Mongolia fended off militarist Japan invasion, securing victory at the Khalkhin Gol River.

In 1936, the Japanese government adopted the Fundamental Principles of National Policy, which outlined plans for the full conquest of China and subsequent military offensives into Mongolia and the Soviet Union.

To execute its expansionist strategies, Japan sought support from Nazi Germany, solidifying their alliance with the signing of the Anti-Comintern Pact on November 25, 1936.

🤝 Considering the possibility of a Japanese attack on the Mongolian People’s Republic and the use of its territory as a launching pad for aggression against the USSR, the Soviet and Mongolian governments signed a Protocol of Mutual Assistance on March 12, 1936.

On July 7, 1937, Japan initiated a full-scale war against China. This further complicated the relations between Moscow and Tokyo, leading to heightened tensions, which boiled over in 1938 into an armed conflict along the Soviet-Manchurian border near Lake Khasan.

⚔️ The Khalkhin Gol River conflict erupted when Japanese troops entered the area and opened fire at the Mongolian border guards. The Red Army swiftly intervened to support their Mongolian allies.

Japan’s invasion of Mongolia was also driven by a desire for retaliation following the unsuccessful confrontation at Lake Khasan. It was also a strategy to compel the Soviet Union to withdraw support for China.

📄 In collaboration with the Mongolian forces, the Red Army successfully repelled the Japanese invasion and by late August, expelled them from Mongolian territory. On September 16, an agreement was reached between the Soviet Union, the Mongolian People’s Republic, and Japan to cease hostilities.

❗️ The victory of the USSR and their Mongolian allies carried a long-term influence on the dynamics of World War II. The Red Army’s triumph at Khalkhin Gol compelled the Japanese to abandon their plans for a major assault on the USSR.

⚔️ The Battle of Stalingrad (July 17, 1942—February 2, 1943) was one of the most important battles in military history, and a true turning point in World War II. The resilience, courage and heart-wrenching personal stories that emerged from the Battle continue to resonate with Russian youth, inspiring a sense of pride and gratitude for Soviet heroes who fiercely fought to save our Fatherland from the Nazi Germany's invaders.

🎥 To commemorate the heroism and selflessness of Stalingrad's defenders Russian youth and MGIMO University students, members of the patriotic project "From Heart to Heart", made a documentary "Immortal Stalingrad", featuring a brief historical account of the Battle, examples of exploits of the Soviet soldiers and personal stories of the survivors of those tragic and heroic days.
⚡️ Comment by Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on the Kiev regime’s attempts to disrupt celebrations of the 10th Anniversary of Republic Day in the DPR and LPR (May 11, 2024).

💬 May 11 marked 10 years since the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) held a historic referendum on their future. The majority of voters in the then Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine chose self-determination, unwilling to accept the nationalist policy of the Kiev regime that had come to power through an unconstitutional armed coup d’etat. Sovereignty was approved by 96.2 percent of referendum participants in the LPR and 89.7 percent in the DPR. As a result, May 11 became Republic Day for the DPR, and May 12 for the LPR.

These referendums have always evoked impotent consternation and rage in Ukraine, whose current rulers fear the voice of the people like the plague. Therefore, the Ukrainian Banderites, aided by the United States and the US-led Western coalition, had cynically timed a series of barbaric terrorist attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure to coincide with the anniversary celebrations in the Russian Donbass republics.

• Late at night on May 10, the Armed Forces of Ukraine fired rockets at Rovenki in the LPR. According to preliminary data, the Ukrainians used a number of recently delivered US ATACMS long-range missiles that hit an oil storage facility, causing a large-scale fire. The strike damaged nearby residential houses and injured a child, among others.

• On May 11, the anniversary of the DPR, the Ukrainian neo-Nazis fired rockets from US-supplied HIMARS launchers at the city of Donetsk. A direct hit at the Paradise restaurant in the Kirov District killed three and wounded eight people, including a 12-year-old girl.

• There were also strikes in other parts of the city, with missiles exploding near the recently opened perinatal centre and a café with a parking lot where participants in the motor rally in honour of Republic Day had arranged to meet. Thankfully, none of them were harmed.

The Investigative Committee of Russia has launched an investigation into these crimes. All those implicated in and responsible for these and other terrorist attacks in Russia will face inevitable punishment.

We admire the courage and fortitude of the people of Russia's Donetsk and Lugansk republics, whose spirit could not be broken by the Ukrainian Nazis currently entrenched in Kiev.

Today, the DPR and the LPR are inalienable parts of the Russian Federation, our common homeland.

A large-scale effort to restore the war-torn economy is underway in the republics, with support from the entire nation. Much-needed programmes are being implemented to strengthen the economy and the social sphere, and improve living standards.
❗️ We are confident that the Zelensky regime will achieve nothing, no matter what it attempts in its impotent rage to prevent us from restoring historical justice. Together, we will bring back the long-awaited peace and solve the most challenging problems. Victory will be ours!
⚡️ Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on the statements by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk

💬 We have took note of the press release of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) published on May 7 with the assessments of its head Volker Türk regarding the situation of journalists in Russia. The High Commissioner’s activity has long lacked objectivity and impartiality required by UN General Assembly Resolution 48/141, however this time the degree of his statements’ political bias is really outrageous and inappropriately arrogant.

In defiance of his mandate Volker Türk allowed himself utterly politicized, biased and lopsided interpretations of the situation in the media pluralism and free access to information in our country, and did not shy away from gross distortions, misrepresentations and unsubstantiated accusations. In his ill-concealed desire to follow in the wake of the Collective West’s anti-Russian rhetoric that international official broke out with a libel that has nothing to do with the real situation.

And at that the High Commissioner has never showed such zeal in dealing with mass evidence of oppressions against Russian and Russian-language media in the West, reprisals against undesirable reporters in the Baltic countries and Moldova, cruel crimes and terrorist acts by Kiev regime against Russian journalists, public figures and publicists.

We have yet to see a substantive response to any of our numerous appeals to Volker Türk regarding these gross violations, which just fuel our suspicions about the bias of his conduct and complete loss of basic ideas of good faith in implementing his mandate as the above UN General Assembly resolution requires.

❗️ We reject point blank the High Commissioner’s statements both in form and in substance. We insist on his strict compliance with all the requirements for an international official of such level, primarily in terms of impartiality and objectivity. We are calling on him to appropriately respond to all crimes and violations with respect to media and journalists regularly reported to him, including by the Russian side.
🗓 On May 6, the Republic of Chad held presidential elections. According to preliminary data published by the National Election Management Agency on May 9, the winner, with 61.03% of the vote, is President of the Transition Period, President of the Republic of Chad, Head of State, and candidate from the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement party Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno. His main opponent, Prime Minister of Chad and leader of the opposition Transformers party Succes Masra, gained 18.53% of the vote.

The voting took place in a calm atmosphere with no serious violations that could affect the outcome of the election. The turnout was 75.9%.

🤝 Moscow welcomes the successful conclusion of the presidential election in Chad, which represents the final stage in the country’s transition to civilian rule. The Russian Federation reaffirms its readiness to further strengthen the longstanding relations of friendship and cooperation with the Republic of Chad.

📢 Ambassador of the Russian Federation to #ASEAN H.E. Mr. Evgeny Zagaynov 🇷🇺 on current state of the ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership, Lao PDR's 2024 ASEAN Chairmanship 🇱🇦, ties between ASEAN, EAEU and SCO, and recent developments in the Asia-Pacific in his interview to RIA Novosti.

Key points:

🔹️ Russia builds its relations with ASEAN on the basis of equality and mutual respect. Russia has never imposed and is not going to impose its will on ASEAN Member States. Our partners know and appreciate that.

🔹️Despite the unprecedented pressure from the West our ASEAN friends remain open to cooperation with our country that has stood the test of time.

🔹️ASEAN has become one of the global centers of gravity. It is both partner and friend of Russia. During the recent ASEAN-Russia Senior Officials' Meeting in Saint Petersburg 🇷🇺 in April parties have outlined steps of further deepening the ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership in a number of areas including science and technology, food and energy security, digitalization, education etc.

🔹️In April Saint Petersburg also hosted the 4th ASEAN-Russia Consultations of the High Representatives for Security Issues which is a unique platform that allows to discuss relevant topical matters in a frank and open manner.

🔹️Russia fully supports the Lao PDR's Chairmanship theme in 2024 "ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience" and is ready to facilitate ASEAN's efforts in its community building. Lao PDR is an old friend of Russia, we have been developing warm and multifaceted ties with Vientiane. President of the Lao PDR Thongloun Sisoulith's 🇱🇦 recent visit to Russia to celebrate the Victory Day on 9 May is another evidence of such a friendship.

🔹️The West, in its attempts to maintain its hegemony and hamper the objective process of a new polycentric world order emergence, undermines the open system of interstate relations with ASEAN in its centre.

🔹️ The militarization of the Asia-Pacific is ongoing. Under the pretext of indivisibility of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security NATO is coming to the region. The US is building up its military presence by deploying the middle-range missiles and doesn't seem to stop. We all know where it leads.

🎙️ Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answer to a question during his remarks at the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation (Moscow, May 13, 2024)

Question: Is the conference on Ukrainian issue convened by the West in Switzerland this June a potential threat to Russia’s foreign policy interests? What are our plans of opposing and counteracting the destructive plots of the Kiev regime and its foreign supervisors?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: The “conference” has long been discussed by all those, who is trying to defeat Russia on the battlefield, without rejecting diplomatic methods, as they say. However, their diplomatic methods (the conference in Switzerland is not an exception but just a continuation of the process in Copenhagen format) boil down to formulating an ultimatum to Russia. <…>

The other day [Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Head] Ignazio Cassis said again that it was senseless to discuss anything without Russia. Why to convene it then? <...>

There were a lot of initiatives: offered by China, South Africa, Brazil and the League of the Arab States (who came to us soon after the beginning of the special military operation). The Chinese one was most comprehensive, aimed at first considering the root causes and working on their removal. The other had an emphasis on humanitarian aspects (exchange of POWs, bodies, access for humanitarian organisations). Yet High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that they were getting ready for a conference in Geneva on the Zelensky formula and all other initiative vanished. He decided for everyone else again. <...>

❗️ Our readiness for talks is reaffirmed at the top level personally by President of Russia Vladimir Putin each time he deals with the Ukraine issue.

<...>

Our cause is just. If they want it on the battlefield then it will be so. Look how they are lamenting over a steady and extensive advance of our Armed Forces.

🇷🇺🇺🇸 Ambassador Anatoly Antonov’s answer to a media question

: Dear Ambassador Antonov, how would you comment on the entry into force of the law, banning the importation of Russian low-enriched uranium into the United States?

💬 Anatoly Antonov: The Administration continues its stillborn policy of inflicting strategic economic defeat on us. The current attack - not only on Russia, but also on the world market for uranium fuel used in nuclear power plants - leads to new shocks in international economic relations. The delicate balance between exporters and importers of uranium products is under threat.

👉 Washington lacks enough national enrichment capacity and so is harming its own economy. Moreover, the financial losses for the United States will be much greater than for Russia. However, the main thing for local strategists is to harm our country.

☝️The interests of consumers in Russian high-quality and highly competitive uranium are simply ignored here. It is also important to note that without our fuel many much praised “green” projects may fail.

📌The Administration's sanctions policy is not leading to desired results. Reality has shown that the Russian economy is ready for any challenges and quickly responds to emerging difficulties, even extracting dividends from the situation. It will be so this time too.

It’s impossible to bring Russian specialized companies to their knees. They will simply speed up the implementation of numerous projects in other countries - just as reliably, safely and profitably. And the so-called strategists in Washington will be the ones to tear their hair out.

Key talking points:

📖 History cannot be changed, but it can be rewritten. And this is something that we're witnessing now. There are attempts on the part of the collective West to smear Russia's history, Russian state, Russian people, to rewrite history in many aspects.

🇷🇺 Battle of Kulikovo of 1380 against Mongol-Tatar invaders is considered the starting point of the Russian nation. A prominent historian once wrote “they went to Kulikovo field as the Moscovites, Rostovites, natives of Serpukhov, Smolensk, Murom, etc but they returned from there as the Russians”.

- Russia was proclaimed empire in 1721 after it emerged victorious from the Northern War of 1700-1721 and retook historically Russian lands from Sweden alongside the access to Baltic Sea.

Russia was surrounded by belligerent neighbouring states (Sweden, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Ottoman empire) and had to expand its territory until it reached natural borders in order to ensure its own protection.

Russian empire never colonized its neighbours, it never exploited its outskirts, rather it invested heavily in their development.
Russia never gave privileges to its core nation at the expense of other people.

- Russian serfdom as a type of feudal dependence was closer to French “servage” or British “villeinship” rather than to outright slavery. Eventually, the serfdom turned into a major social evil and an impediment to the economic growth. After the defeat in the Crimean War (1853-1856) the serfdom was abolished in Russia.

- Nicholas II of Russia and George V of Britain were cousins. Some historians have it that when the second Anglo-Boer war (1899-1902) started, it were the family ties that prevented the Russian emperor from interfering in the conflict to protect the Boer republics at the request of Paul Kruger. Yet, these ties never secured Nicholas and his family a shelter in London after the October revolution of 1917.

- There were up to 270 Russian volunteers fighting in the ranks of Boer armies against the Brits. Apart from that Russia deployed the Russian Red Cross detachment and the Russian-Dutch ambulance unit which helped both combatants and civilians, provided humanitarian assistance to the prisoners of British concentration camps.

- Russia’s support for South Africa was not limited to volunteers. In Bloemfontein there is a secondary school for girls called ‘Oranje’ which was built and operated in early XX century with funds allocated by the Russian Imperial Court.

☝🏻 The Border War (1966-1989) was not about Russians fighting Afrikaners; it was about the socialist system assisting decolonization of Africa, fighting apartheid. It has nothing to do with people-to-people relations.

🌍 USSR contributed significantly to decolonization of Africa. It was on the initiative of the Soviet Union and through the efforts of Soviet diplomats that the UN Declaration on Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples was adopted in December 1960.
🤝 On May 13, Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya Abdullah al-Lafi and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Government of National Unity of Libya Taher al-Baour, who arrived in Moscow on a working visit.

• During an in-depth exchange of views on the situation in Libya, Sergey Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to continue supporting the country’s comprehensive and sustainable stabilisation.

• He stressed the importance of inclusive national dialogue to preserve Libya’s territorial integrity, unity, and sovereignty.

• He also pointed to the relevance of efforts to rally international support for the Libyan people in advancing the political process, with the United Nations playing the leading role.

🤝 The parties stated their shared interest in establishing and strengthening a mutually beneficial, multifaceted cooperation. In this connection, it was considered appropriate to facilitate the early resumption of activities of the Russian-Libyan Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation, which serves as the key coordinating mechanism for bilateral collaboration in trade and the economy.
