⚡️ Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on the parliamentary elections and appointment of a new government in Bangladesh 🇧🇩
🗳 The results of the parliamentary election held on January 7 in Bangladesh have been announced. The ruling Bangladesh Awami League secured 222 out of the 300 seats in the parliament, winning the majority of votes.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the people of Bangladesh on the successful outcome of the election.
Unfortunately, some opposition parties chose not to participate in the election process. External attempts to influence the election’s outcome were observed, as we mentioned on November 22 and December 15, 2023. The leadership of Bangladesh should be recognised for creating favourable conditions for the free expression of voters’ will in this situation.
✅ Local observers and over 200 international observers, including those from Russia, have confirmed the legitimacy of the election and its adherence to generally accepted standards. Andrey Shutov, a member of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, headed the Russian delegation.
On January 11, a new government was formed in Bangladesh, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed being reappointed to the position she previously held.
✉️ President of Russia Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin extended their congratulations to her on assuming office.

💐 On January 11, Minister Counselor of the Russian Embassy in the USA and a representative of the Defense Attaché Office paid tribute to the memory of the Soviet pilots who perished 79 years ago in Elizabeth City (North Carolina) while ferrying to the USSR the PBY «Catalina» as part of the project «Zebra».
📌 On this day in 1945, a plane crashed while taking off from the Pasquotank River. The victims of the tragedy were members of the joint Soviet-British crew that was on board. Four Red Army soldiers died: commander - Captain Nikolai Mikhailovich Chikov, navigator - Captain Vladimir Moiseevich Levin, flight engineer - Lieutenant Dmitry Mikhailovich Medvedev and flight engineer - Lieutenant Afanasy Ivanovich Borodin, as well as British Air Force navigator - Lieutenant Peter Nataros.
🤝 Project "Zebra" is one of the symbols of the military brotherhood of the USSR and the USA, which fought shoulder to shoulder against Nazism during the Second World War. Thanks to the efforts of the parties to the anti-Hitler coalition, with the decisive role of the Red Army, we defeated the enemy. In the context of the “brown plague virus” spreading in Western countries, our common task is to fight against any attempts to justify Nazi criminals and their accomplices. Today, more than ever, it is important to tell the younger generation about the tragic events of the past, working together to perpetuate the memory of the heroes of those years.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the defenders of the Fatherland, who liberated the world from fascist filth. We pay tribute to their courage and valor.

Boris Johnson and the denial of the obvious
Western media has published statements by former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson seeking to deny his responsibility for the breakdown of talks between Russia and Ukraine in the spring of 2022.
Obviously, Johnson is deploying clichés about “Russian propaganda” for cover.
👉However, his statements, published on January 11, 2024 in “The Times” and “The Wall Street Journal”, raise the question: what exactly is he trying to refute?
▪︎According to Johnson, during his controversial visit to Kiev on April 9, 2022, he sought to persuade Vladimir Zelensky to refuse to sign the above-mentioned treaty, justifying it by his distrust towards Moscow.
▪︎He bluntly stated that "any deal with Putin was going to be pretty sordid".
▪︎He recommended continuing hostilities since "Putin must fail".
▪︎He promised prolonged support, new tranches of military supplies, including anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles, and financial assistance.
▪︎Moreover, following the visit, the Prime Minister's office set the record straight. A subsequent government press release clearly stated that, while in Kiev, Johnson "urged against any negotiations with Russia on terms that gave credence to the Kremlin’s false narrative for the invasion".
❗There can be no doubt that the cornerstone provision on permanent neutrality of Ukraine, as set out in the draft "Treaty on Permanent Neutrality and Security Guarantees for Ukraine", did not accord with the vision in London and Washington of the "terms" under which the conflict could have been resolved. Otherwise NATO members would not have spent the preceding eight years cynically exploiting the Minsk agreements in order to systematically prepare the Ukrainian military for a direct kinetic confrontation with Russia.
▪︎Against this backdrop the former prime minister's self-exonerating claims that the final decision belonged to the Ukrainians are utterly futile.
▪︎Importantly, by the beginning of the Special Military Operation, Johnson's premiership was already hanging by a thread.
▪︎The Ukrainian conflict was thus perceived by him as a promising chance to revive his flagging career.
The issue at stake was never about concern for the future of Ukraine and Ukrainians - only about self-promotion and political survival. The outcome of Johnson's voyage to Kiev proved to be tragic for Ukraine.

By early 1945, the Red Army in the east and the Western Allies from the Second Front had closed in on Germany for a series of final assaults on the enemy. As before, the Wehrmacht concentrated its main forces – 185 divisions, including 33 tank and mechanised divisions, as well as 21 brigades – against the Soviet fronts.
The Soviet offensive was planned for January 20. But on January 6, the Allies suffered a major setback in the Ardennes and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill asked Soviet leader Joseph Stalin for help by moving up the offensive on the Vistula front. The Soviet Supreme High Command General Headquarters responded by curtailing preparations for the Vistula-Oder offensive and setting the date for its start on January 12.
☝️ The Red Army had to break through 300-500 kilometres of multi-layered defensive positions between the Vistula and the Oder rivers. The first line of defence on the Vistula consisted of four belts 30 to 70 kilometres deep. The most formidable obstacle for the attacking forces was the sixth line of defence that ran along the 1939 German-Polish border and included the Pomerania, Meseritz, and Glogau-Breslau fortified areas.
As a result, 35 enemy divisions were routed and another 25 lost between 50 and 70% of their strength, weapons and equipment. Forces of the two Soviet fronts took prisoner 147,400 officers and men and captured 14,000 guns and mortars, as many as 1,400 tanks and assault guns, and over 1,000 aircraft.

❗️Another provocative act by the Latvian authorities is causing deep indignation. This time, the victim of the demonstrative reprisals of politicians fixated on Russophobia has become the Russian military pensioner, a prominent figure in the compatriot movement, chairman of of the Latvian-Russian Cooperation Association B.G. Katkov.
• According to the decision of the Latvian Minister of the Interior, the elderly man has been considered a threat to national security and “sentenced” to deportation from the country with an indefinite ban on return. At the same time, no facts are provided proving the “guilt” of the 82-year-old pensioner.
• The verdict issued by the Latvian authorities is not only absolutely inhumane, violating the principle of “non-separation” of the family (the compatriot has a spouse, children and grandchildren in Latvia), but also flagrantly violates the provisions of the bilateral intergovernmental agreement on social protection of the Russian military pensioners and members of their families of 1994.
• We are convinced that this cynical action is purely political in nature, aimed at intimidating the Russian-speaking community of Latvia and eradicating all forms of “dissent.”
❗️We expect from international human rights organizations a fundamental assessment of the discriminatory policy implemented by official Riga against the Russian citizens.

🎙 Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova's comment on Boris Katkov’s expulsion by the Latvian authorities
❌ On January 12, retired Russian veteran and chair of the Latvia-Russia Cooperation Association Board Boris Katkov was forcibly expelled from the Republic of Latvia.
In accordance with the decision by the Latvian Interior Ministry, our 82-year-old compatriot was expelled and will "never be allowed to come back" since he poses a "national security threat," which has become a common pretext for the police state in this Baltic country.
This is an absolutely cynical verdict on behalf of the Latvian government, which violates the principle intended to prevent the separation of family members. In fact, Boris Katkov’s spouse, children and grandchildren all remain in Latvia. This also runs counter to the 1994 Russia-Latvia intergovernmental agreement on social safeguards for Russian retired war veterans and their family members.
❗️ We are convinced that this move is a provocation and a political manoeuvre violating human rights and freedoms, and is designed to intimidate Russian-speaking residents of Latvia who have become victims of neo-Nazi manifestations and Russophobia.
We have little doubt that international human rights bodies will once again fail to speak against this latest manifestation of Riga's discriminatory policy towards our compatriots.
Considering Boris Katkov’s age and the stress he has had to endure, officials in the Pskov Regions have helped him find accommodation, and provided medical services and other forms of support. Our compatriot asked them to help him travel to Kaliningrad and received the assistance he needed. We will do everything to support him and provide for his comfort.
☝️ Russia will stand by the people expelled from Latvia and will offer them the assistance they need.

🎙 Statement by Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia at UNSC briefing on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question (January 12, 2024)
💬 Russia supported Algeria's initiative to convene today's urgent meeting of the Council on the situation in the zone of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, with a focus on the threat of forced displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, in light of the illegality of such steps by West Jerusalem in the terms of international law.
And that is only part of the deadly "puzzle" that assembles into the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
As of now, more than 23,000 people have been killed in the enclave. That includes, by preliminary data, more than 7,500 children. Thousands of people are missing under the rubble of destroyed buildings. <...> Civilian infrastructure, including medical facilities, has been destroyed almost completely. The total blockade of Gaza has led to acute shortages of water, fuel and medical supplies. <...> Since the beginning of the escalation, some 2 million people have already been displaced. Half of them are women and children. <...>
❗️ The attack of October 7 cannot be used to legitimize Israel's use of force in the Gaza Strip. <...>
A coherent strategy of West Jerusalem is emerging. Its goal is to forcibly displace Palestinians, and its logic is simple - to make life in Gaza unbearable, even impossible, leaving the civilian population with the unimaginable choice – either leave your homeland or get killed. <...>
☝️ Under the current circumstances, Russia's principled approaches remain unchanged:
• an immediate ceasefire,
• unimpeded & safe humanitarian access,
• release of hostages,
• the restoration of the political horizon on the basis of the two-state solution for the Middle East settlement.
⚠️ Without an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the Middle East risks plunging into a full-scale war with the most serious global implications.

🎙 Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s answer to a media question regarding Russia’s position on the Taiwan issue
❓ Question: Taiwan held elections today to choose the so-called president and MPs. What is the Russian Federation’s position on this matter?
💬 Maria Zakharova: Russia’s position on Taiwan is well-known and consistent, as set forth in Presidential Executive Order No 1072 of September 15, 1992, On the Relations between Russian and Taiwan.
This position is also set forth in the key documents governing Russia-China relations, primarily Article 5 of the Russian-Chinese Treaty on Neighbourly Relations, Friendship and Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China, dated July 16, 2001.
<...> We believe that relations between the two parties in the Taiwan Strait constitute an internal matter for China. Attempts by certain countries to use the elections in Taiwan to pressure Beijing and destabilise the situation in the strait and across the region are counterproductive and must be condemned by the international community.
☝️ We call on all outside forces to refrain from provocative actions undermining regional stability and international security.

🎙 Statement by Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia at UNSC briefing with regard to strikes by US-led "international coalition" against the territory of Yemen (January 12, 2024)
💬 On January 11, the so-called "international coalition" led by the United States and Great Britain, which included Australia, Canada, Bahrain and the Netherlands, who calls itself the capital of world justice, launched massive strikes on the territory of Yemen.
This was not an attack against a group in this country, but against the people of Yemen as a whole. They hit the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, the cities of Sanaa, Saada, Zabid, Taiz and Damar. The US and satellites bombed airports and other infrastructure. Fires are burning in shell craters.
Unfortunately, what we are witnessing in Yemen looks painfully familiar. We have seen the exact same pattern of destruction in Gaza for the past three months. Now, long-suffering Yemen has once again become a hotbed of hostilities in the region.
Clearly, Washington is not going to stop there. The White House said it "reserves the right" to resume military action if there be more "threats". It does not take an expert to see that the United States will determine these "threats" and response measures at own discretion, without slightest regard for international law.
☝️ Massive strikes of the US and the UK against the territory of Yemen have nothing to do with the right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. <...>
The US and its allies have a long record of gross violations and misinterpretations of international law. <...> Apparently, when it comes to Washington's hegemonic aspirations, neither international law nor the ICJ carry any weight for Americans and their allies. This is what the US-promoted "rules-based world order" is about. <...>
❗️ We call on the international community to resolutely condemn the attack on Yemen by a group of countries under the lead of the US and UK that was done without a UN mandate.
