*Islamic New Year: Moon Not Sighted, Ashura To Be Observed On August 9*

Asif Iqbal

Srinagar, Jul 29 (GNS): Grand Mufti, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam on Friday evening said the moon for Muharram-ul-Haram was not sighted anywhere and as such Sunday will mark the beginning of new Islamic Year – 1444 A.H.

Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam told GNS that no witness’ could be made available on record regarding the sighting of moon, from any part of Jammu or Kashmir divisions. “The new year will as such start from Sunday, July 31, and the Ashura be observed on August 9”, Islam said.

In his message, the top Mufti urged Muslims to observe the ensuing eve with austerity and also asked them to pray for the overall well-being of Ummah, especially of youth. “People should refrain from indulging in immodest activities”, Islam said adding the ensuing eve has a fundamental message that we should not bow before falsehood and instead remain steadfast on what our religion teaches us. *‘2 Decades On, Majority of F&ES Department Employees Await Promotions’*

Asif Iqbal

Srinagar, Jul 29 (GNS): The majority of Fire and Emergency Department employees recruited after 1998 are awaiting promotions, with the higher-ups intriguingly holding back a list of proposed promotions of the candidates who appeared for exams in January this year.

A delegation of employees told GNS that the department made recruitment in 1998, 2009 and 2020. “The 1998 batch has seen minimal promotions but the 2009 batch has seen no promotions at all”, they said, claiming that it was taking a mental toll on all of the employees with the department literally doing nothing to alleviate our suffering.”

“There are those employees who have been serving the department from the last 24 years, yet most of them have seen no promotions”, they lamented.

“As per ‘Rule Book’, the department is supposed to make promotions every three years besides convening DPCs (Department Promotion Committee) twice a year, however nothing such is being followed”, they alleged.

Last DPC on record, they said, was conducted some three years before, when Mr. VK Singh was DG.

“Most of us have even undergone requisite training and even appeared in a written test and made ourselves physically available before the authorities in January earlier this year. However the final list is awaited even after a lapse of six months”, they further said.

When contacted, DG Fire and Emergency Services told GNS that promotions are likely to be granted in a week or two. “We are left with some formalities, once we are done with them, the list will be accordingly made public”, the official said.

“If anyone has any sort of grievance, he may approach us directly so that we resolve the issues’ accordingly”, he said, adding, “the employees need not to be anguished about anything.” (GNS)
