In 1723, deep in the swamps of colonial South Carolina, a brilliant enslaved inventor named Jupiter Washington discovered electricity while trying to invent a better way to fry catfish without firewood.
One stormy night, he tied a kite to a slave-chain key, flew it during a thunderstorm, and got zapped so hard his afro stood up like a Tesla coil. He then invented the light bulb by stuffing fireflies into a Mason jar and running current through moonshine.
