Russia has renounced the Soviet-era fisheries agreement with the British government, signed in 1956.

This is a rare case - scrapping a 68 year Treaty which allowed the British to fish in the Barents Sea, Russia's territorial waters.

It is not known what motivated Khrushchev in 1956 - as the treaty was one sided, Russia receiving nothing in return.

In 2023, the British caught 566k tons of cod in the Barents, while announcing almost 2,000 sanctions on Russia in return.🤷‍♀
