Model Answer:
Examiner: Do you think advertising campaigns make people buy things they don't need?
IELTS Candidate: "I think that advertising campaigns can certainly influence people's purchasing decisions, but whether they make people buy things they don't need is a different story. On one hand, advertising can create brand awareness and promote products that people may not have known about otherwise. For example, a company may launch a new campaign to promote their latest smartphone model, which may not have been on people's radar before. In this case, the campaign can help people become aware of the product and its features, which may lead to increased sales.
On the other hand, advertising can also be manipulative and persuasive, which can lead people to buy things they don't need. For instance, a company may use emotional appeals or create a sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) to convince people to buy their product. This can lead to people buying things they don't really need, just because they feel like they have to keep up with the latest trends or because they're afraid of missing out.
All in all you know , while advertising campaigns can certainly influence people's purchasing decisions, whether they make people buy things they don't need depends on the type of advertising and the target audience. As consumers, it's important to be aware of the tactics used by advertisers and to make informed decisions about what we buy."

"The phrase 'hair of the dog' comes from an old folk remedy for rabies (бешенство). In medieval times, people believed that if someone was bitten by a rabid dog, they could be cured by applying a few hairs from the same dog to the wound. This belief was based on the saying 'like cures like'—the idea that the cause of a problem could also be its cure.
Over time, this idea extended to alcohol. People began using 'hair of the dog' to describe the practice of drinking a small amount of alcohol to ease a hangover (похмелье)—based on the (incorrect) notion that consuming more of what made you sick would help you recover.
Today, the phrase is purely figurative and is only used in the context of drinking. If someone says, 'You need a hair of the dog,' they mean having another drink will help cure your hangover—even though science suggests that’s not really the case!

The Challenges of Aging: A Geriatric Reality
As people age, they face a multitude of challenges that can affect their physical and mental well-being. The geriatric ward at the hospital is equipped with specialized equipment to care for elderly patients, but even with modern medicine, the problems associated with old age can be daunting.
One of the most significant issues is the decline in physical and mental abilities. As people age, their bodies tend to deteriorate, making it harder to perform daily tasks. This can be frustrating and demoralizing, especially for those who were once active and independent. Frail and weak, many older individuals require assistance with daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, and eating.
Illness and disease are also major concerns for the elderly. Cachectic individuals, who have lost significant weight due to illness or disease, are particularly vulnerable to infection and other health complications. The high morbidity rate among the elderly population is a major concern for healthcare providers, who must work to prevent and treat a range of age-related health issues.
Despite these challenges, many older individuals remain vibrant and active, with a wealth of wisdom and experience to share. Venerable individuals, who have spent decades teaching, researching, or working in their field, are widely respected and admired. Their stories and insights can be a valuable resource for younger generations, providing a unique perspective on life and its challenges.
However, even the healthiest and most active older individuals may experience periods of sickness or illness. Sickly individuals may need to take medication regularly, and may require additional support and care to manage their condition.
As our population ages, it is essential that we prioritize the health and well-being of older individuals. This includes providing access to quality healthcare, social support, and community resources. By doing so, we can help older individuals maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life, even in the face of declining physical and mental abilities.
Ultimately, aging is a natural part of life, and it is essential that we approach it with compassion, understanding, and respect. By acknowledging the challenges and triumphs of older individuals, we can work to create a more supportive and inclusive society for all ages.

🌟 GRAMMAR: ABSOLUTE CONSTRUCTIONS
❗️ An absolute participial construction is a phrase that adds extra information to a sentence. It has a noun (or pronoun) and a participle (a verb form ending in -ing or -ed).
📌We can form absolute constructions with Participle I (-ing) or Participle II (-ed):
🔺The sun setting, we packed up our picnic.
🔺Her arms crossed, she waited impatiently.
📌Unlike "деепричастный оборот" in Russian, absolute constructions do not depend on the subject or predicate in the main clause.
🔺The match having ended, the fans left the stadium. (We would translate it into Russian with the word "когда").
📌Note that absolute constructions are separated from the main clause with a comma:
🔺His homework finished, he went out to play.
