They didn’t scrap Digital ID. Starmer didn't 'U-turn'. One symbol was sacrificed so the system could advance quietly. While attention drifts, the infrastructure is being built. Resistance worked... that’s why they're trying to 'manage' it & placate you.

An amendment has just been approved by the House of Lords under the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill.

Age checks won’t be optional. Everyone 16+ will be required to provide digital verification and biometrics to use social media and the internet. Digital ID by stealth.

Since then, the government has simply softened its language. Keir Starmer has said that no single credential will be mandated for right-to-work and right-to-rent checks. That announcement has been widely misinterpreted.

Digital ID has not been scrapped. The planned checks themselves remain mandatory and digital, carried out via One Login. Nothing fundamental has changed.

What has been removed, allegedly, is the requirement for one specific credential to sit in the UK Government Wallet — not the system itself.

One Login is the foundation of the entire digital architecture. It is the planned compulsory entry point through which individuals will be required to prove their identity and share biometric data in order to access core functions: passports, driving licences, tax, benefits, company directorships, and right-to-work and right-to-rent checks. This is already in force for company directors as of 18th November 2025.

The next layer of the stack is the Government Wallet, which will host digital credentials and tokens. It is already being trialled through the veterans card and the digital driving licence. The proposed 'BritCard' (a red herring) was never the whole project; it was one token among many. The wallet itself is the infrastructure — an app-of-apps built on mandatory digital identity verification and tokenisation of everything and everyone, including your money... soon to be digital and programmable.

Nothing has been abandoned. The system remains digital, biometric, and soon to be entirely compulsory/mandatory/legal requirement. The enforcement mechanisms are obvious even now: age verification for social media when the under-16s ban comes in, restrictions on under-18 VPN use, and access to work, housing, and public services all depend on digital proof of identity.

What has changed is the presentation, not the direction of travel. The announcement was simply to placate the resistance and have you believe the entire infrastructure has been scrapped.
