Why Greenland?

Trump has stated recently that his desire to acquire control of Greenland is for national security reasons related to the encroachment of China and Russia into the Western Hemisphere.

It's likely he has Intelligence implicating China or Russia (or both) in a near-term plan to secure a beachhead there. If so, it's critical to our national security to prevent that from happening. The only way to do that is to set up military installations, which requires some degree of control over the territory.

Thay doesn't mean military conflict. The US has arrangements with Puerto Rico, American Samoa, etc., where we provide military protection and financial assistance without annexation or statehood.
