The Intelligent Systems Laboratory (ISL) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY has openings for postdoctoral associates and Ph.D. students in the areas of causal learning for computer vision. For the postdoctoral associates, we are seeking candidates with significant knowledge and experience in structural causal learning and inference using probabilistic graphical models (PGMs). For Ph.D. students, we are interested in highly motivated applicants with strong math background, programming skills, and strong interests in the research areas. Prior knowledge in PGMs and computer vision is a plus. The postdocs and Ph.D. students will develop new deep causal learning and inference methods, based on combining deep learning with causal learning, to scale up the causal structure learning and inference, and to learn interpretable, fair, and domain-invariant causal representations for various predictive tasks in computer vision.
The postdoc positions are available immediately and the Ph.D positions will be available starting from this summer. The openings will be available for multiple years. If interested, please send your CV to Prof. Qiang Ji at jiq@rpi.edu . Further information about current projects at ISL may be found at http://www.ecse.rpi.edu/~qji

The Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) offers a PhD position in the interdisciplinary graduate school “Governance Monitor”. The PhD candidate will apply natural language processing (NLP) to analyze narratives on climate-related events (e.g. floods, droughts, heatwaves, storms) aiming to:
Investigate how extreme events such as floods, droughts and heatwaves influence political and media narratives on the need to adapt to climate change;
Identify which societal actors (e.g. NGOs, government, industry) are linked to distinct narrative types;
Analyse the causal relationships between such disasters and changes in the discourse over time and across different regions
For questions, please get in touch with Mariana de Brito (mariana.brito@ufz.de).
The application deadline is 13.02.2023, and the start date is flexible. To apply, please upload a letter of motivation and CV using the following link:
