Q: Whenever physicists use the term “emergence” I never know what they mean. Do physicists have a definition of emergence? Is it roughly the same as what philosophers mean by it?
A: It means there is a many-to-one map from a micro theory to an “emergent” macro theory (with possibly a very different ontology), such that the map approximately commutes with time evolution. Emergence reflects “real patterns” in Dennett’s sense.

The IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) is seeking two PhD students for a Google funded Natural Language Processing (NLP) project, led by Natalie Schluter, on probing and formal modelling of linguistic representation layers for improving NLP task performance. The project also carries some emphasis on lower-resourced languages.
The position is for 3 or 4 years depending on previous studies, with starting date in early 2020, or soon thereafter.
Qualification Requirements
The following qualifications are required:
3 year programme: candidates should have an MSc (or equivalent)
4 year programme: candidates should have a BSc
Fluency in some sub-Saharan non-colonial African language is a plus.
