Abstract: Governments, non-profits, and citizen scientists are putting more and more of the world’s cultural heritage online in digital form, opening a new frontier in the science of society and giving us an unprecedented window, complementary to traditional psychological sciences, onto how the human species created the modern world. I’ll present new results from studies at the Laboratory for Social Minds: a study of 40,000 speeches from the French Revolution that shows how individual revolutionaries both competed and cooperated to create some of the basic features of parliamentary democracy, and a parallel study of the Serbian parliament in the post-Milosevic era shows the continuing challenges faced by democratic governments. I’ll present an analysis of the first two hundred years of the Royal Society’s Philosophical Transactions, that reveals the bursts of innovation and Kuhnian revolutions from its founding in 1665 to the late industrial age. And I’ll show an analysis of the 70,000 papers in the international high-energy physics archive shows the previously invisible threads of combination and creativity that characterize the cutting edge of twenty-first century science. Some very simple mathematical tools, drawn from information theory, take us beyond foundational work in cultural evolution to provide a new theory of how we create, compete and thrive in the societies and institutions we create.
