The new satellite carries a an Automatic Identification System.
AIS enables ships to broadcast their identities and locations via transponders, operating globally so that they can be tracked precisely.
CombiningAIS with radar imaging makes it possible to detect ‘silent’ vessels - aka the ones that are not broadcasting they signal.
this could be a sign of potential illegal maritime traffic.
