Exciting news from Frankfurt! Today, at the ESA Earth Observation Commercialisation event, Open Cosmos signed a €35M contract with the European Space Agency - ESA to launch NanoMagSat, a constellation of three advanced satellites that will monitor Earth’s magnetic field and ionospheric environment.

✨ Why does it matter?
Earth's magnetic field is crucial—it shields us from harmful space radiation and enables technologies like navigation and geophysical surveying. NanoMagSat will extend the legacy of ESA’s Swarm mission, ensuring continuous European leadership in magnetic field observation from space.

🔭 The mission highlights:
- 3 satellites orbiting at 545 km altitude in polar and inclined orbits for unparalleled coverage.
- Cutting-edge instruments to measure magnetic fields, plasma density, and ionospheric dynamics.
- First launch planned for late 2027, with a 3-year operational lifetime for the entire constellation.
- Developed by Open Cosmos and a stellar European team including IPGP, CEA-Leti, University of Oslo, COMET Ingeniería, and DTU Space.

💡 What will it achieve?
The data from NanoMagSat will be made available as per the free and open data policy. It will advance our understanding of the complex dynamics of the Earth’s magnetic field and of the ionospheric environment key for multiple applications such as Space weather forecasting, navigation accuracy, climate studies and geophysical exploration
