A novel way to study ice from space ❄️

Researchers fed @CopernicusEU #Sentinel3 data into Vision Transformers, a type of neural network that splits an input image - in this case, the optical images from the Sentinel-3 datasets - into a sequence of patches, serialises each one into a vector and maps it.

The model then captures the dependencies between image patches and provides a nuanced understanding of the complex structures within sea ice:
