The 3-year-long La Niña event had a temporary cooling influence in South-West Pacific in 2022. But the mean temperature was 0.2 °C to 0.3 °C above the last strong La Niña event in 2011.

The new El Niño will turn up the heat.

WMO #StateofClimate Report in South-West Pacific region shows economic costs of around US$ 8.5 billion from flood events in 2022, 3 x more compared to 2021.

Flood events also accounted for 70% of the 35 natural hazards reported in the region.
