Unfortunately what happens at the poles, doesn't stay at the poles: the loss of ice from polar regions has ripple effects felt all around the globe. Earth is losing more than a trillion tonnes of ice a year, more than 7,000x the annual water consumption of the whole city of Paris.

Climate change is the biggest challenge humankind is facing today; the continual decline of Earth's polar regions is one of the biggest warning signs that we are failing miserably at turning dialogue into action. While world leaders have the task to tackle and overcome this challenge, space is a crucial element of effective climate policy and action. We are here to help and satellites are perfectly placed to share the darkest secrets of a suffering planet, in the most remote of regions.

I will speak on this at the #OnePlanetPolarSummit. Waving the 'space for climate' flag high at every given opportunity remains my core mission as a father, as a scientist, and as @ESA DG.
