🔥 Fire is a complex issue shaped by intertwined social, economic, and ecological factors. For millennia, communities have used fire as a traditional land management tool to maintain fire-dependent ecosystems. Today, the world faces increasing threats of uncontrolled wildfires due to altered fire regimes coupled with the effects of climate change.

🌍 Last week, IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team Programme Officer, Sairandhri Lapalikar, attended the UNFF Country-led Initiative on Forest Fires in Istanbul, Turkiye (https://t.co/029SAcGYpB). The convening focused on enhancing international cooperation and policy solutions on integrated fire management as well as sharing innovative approaches to advanced technologies and community-based approaches to fire management and risk awareness.

🌳 IUCN participated in a panel showcasing innovative and inclusive community-based approaches to fire management—emphasising the importance of local participation, traditional knowledge, and risk awareness in tandem with modern technologies to enhance prevention, preparedness, and response capacities. We also highlighted the work communities are leading in northern Thailand in partnership with the International Model Forest Network to reduce forest fires in the region.
