🌳 Earlier this month, the IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team attended the International Conference on Old-Growth Forests and Ancient Trees in Florence, Italy. The conference aimed to foster dialogue around the universal value of old-growth forests.

🌼 At the conference, our team's Senior Programme Officer, Anique Hillbrand, spoke on the importance of safeguarding old-growth and primary forests—explaining their essential role in protecting biodiversity regionally and globally, achieving climate objectives, maintaining ecosystem resilience, and protecting cultural heritage.

🍁 Despite their global significance, these old-growth forests cover less than 3% of the European Union’s land area and are increasingly threatened by logging, infrastructure expansion, climate change, and policy gaps. Protection of remaining intact forests, combined with strategic forest landscape restoration to regenerate secondary forests and buffer zones, are essential to meet the goals of the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, particularly Target 3.
