🌲 Primary forests are complex ecosystems that host a vast amount of the world's terrestrial biodiversity, act as significant carbon sinks, and provide numerous ecosystem services essential for human well-being and survival.
This month, the IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team (FGT) organized an event at the #IUCNcongress, emphasizing the importance of increasing recognition of the importance of Primary Forests.

🌏With the #IUCNcongress now over, we at the Forest and Grasslands Team are reflecting on the power of the Union to bring together Members, partners, and communities to build a better future for people and nature, especially our terrestrial ecosystems.
📚 Here are some key takeaways from our team:
1️⃣ Conserving and restoring terrestrial ecosystems is not the task of one organization or country alone. It calls for shared purpose, courage, and partnership—the kind that transforms collective action into enduring resilience for people and nature.
2️⃣ More finance and support must be channeled directly to local communities, especially women, youth, and Indigenous Peoples, so that people are at the center of conservation action.
3️⃣ Whether we’re talking about restoration of degraded ecosystems or protection of intact landscapes, collaboration is key in conservation—governments, organizations, civil society, and Indigenous People working together to achieve a common goal means a more sustainable future.
4️⃣ Robust legislation and policy coherence are major factors that need to be integrated into conservation strategies across scales, especially to protect the ecosystems most at risk.
5️⃣ Success stories are out there, and we must amplify and learn from them. The many case studies presented at Congress encapsulate how stakeholders and decision makers are increasing ambition and building momentum to achieve conservation goals for the benefit of all.
🌐 The #IUCNCongress only takes place once every four years, and we are incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to connect with so many stakeholders who are making a difference, from local communities to global conventions. Thank you to everyone who collaborated with us and made this Congress such a success.
