Hurricane Katrina 20th Anniversary: Advancements in Track Forecasting (Part 3 of 5)

Friday, August 29 is the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina making landfall along the U.S. Gulf coast and devastating the coasts of Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana. A lot has changed since 2005.

In this video, Senior Hurricane Specialist John Cangialosi talks about the advancements NHC has made since Hurricane Katrina in forecasting where tropical cyclones will move and how far in advance hurricane and tropical storm watches and warnings are issued.

RT @NASAAmes: Tiny particles floating in our air.

This visualization shows how tiny particles called aerosols move through Earth's atmosphere from August 1 to September 14, 2024, using NASA's Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) model. These particles, which include sea salt, dust, smoke, and sulfates, can travel thousands of miles and affect air quality and visibility far from their original sources.

By tracking these movements, NASA helps communities prepare for changes in air quality and visibility while advancing our understanding of Earth's complex atmospheric system.

A tropical wave moving westward through the Caribbean Sea is leading to strong thunderstorms over the western basin into Nicaragua and Honduras. Gusty and erratic winds and rapidly building seas are likely near convection, and mariners are urged to use caution in this region. https://t.co/KOSyRaAgqF

2 pm Wed, Aug 27: Aside from Tropical Storm #Fernand, the tropics in the Atlantic appear relatively quiet for the next week.

Keep in mind that we're quickly approaching the peak of the hurricane season, and activity can certainly ramp up as we head into September.
