RT @NWSNewOrleans: We know most of you are getting inundated w/Katrina anniversary posts & many of you probably would like to not be reminded of it. So here is a different historic storm for both Louisiana & the Nation. Like Steve, I as well (CAB) lived in BTR at the time & vividly remember Andrew.

REMEMBERING ANDREW

33 years ago tonight, Hurricane Andrew was approaching the coast of Louisiana. It would make landfall near Morgan City around 3:30 AM on Aug. 26, 1992.

It was a Category 3 at landfall in Louisiana, but had struck Florida as a Cat. 5 (later upgrade) a couple days prior. At least 9 fatalities were attributed to Andrew in Louisiana.

I had just started my junior year of high school in New Orleans as Andrew approached. Against the objections of my brother and I (2 wannabe meteorologists), our family evacuated from NOLA to Baton Rouge. What a memorable experience as we ended up going into worse weather than had we just stayed home.
