Satellite data revealed something unexpected: over a 10-day period in the summer of 2014, a massive crater formed on the surface of Greenland ice sheet as 90 million cubic metres of water were suddenly released from a hidden subglacial lake.

This is equivalent to about nine hours' worth of water thundering over Niagara Falls at peak flow!
