Tilting MTG-S1, for its own good!

The Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) Sounder satellite, with the @CopernicusEU Sentinel-4 instrument on board, has undergone a series of tests and manoeuvres at the launch site, which were performed to enable the mechanisms of the mission’s Infrared Sounder instrument to be locked and prepared for launch in July 2025.

The manoeuvres involved tilting the satellite vertically, back to a horizontal position, then rotating it.

Decades-old satellite datasets got an update thanks to @esa’s Fundamental Data Records (FDR) framework.

Data from selected Heritage missions were reprocessed and calibrated, boosting quality and making them more compatible with current missions. This process is helpful for long-term studies and especially for climate research.

The first two FDR projects, which include ERS and Envisat records, were published in 2024.
