Once again we are taking advantage of the moonlight from the nearly-full moon last night to show off both Hurricane Franklin and Hurricane Idalia in the Day/Night Band.

This imagery was stitched-together using multiple high-resolution images from polar-orbiting satellites.

Rapid intensification is when winds increase by at least 35 miles per hour (55 kilometers per hour) in a 24-hour period. Some key ingredients for rapid intensification are high sea surface temperatures, excess ocean heat content, and low vertical wind shear.

Here's another interpretation of the ERC from one of our TC experts:
Recon is reporting concentric eyewalls. This seems less like an ERC and more like a banding eye feature possibly due to some dry air entrainment seen earlier that has wrapped around the outer eyewall. - Derrick Herndon
