When the city of New York decided to complete the restoration of Beach 108th Street, a popular Rockaway Beach corridor in Queens, after it was destroyed by Storm Sandy in 2012, they did it with a new kind of porous pavement.

This will allow rain water to be absorbed back into the ground each year.

Why is this important? When rainwater is not allowed to flow into the ground it increases the risk of flooding, soil degradation and thus loss of biodiversity as well as increasing the heat island effect.
